LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

There's another lady there who signed the kill order, got a date, and had SOB and the news out. Once again, CDFA did a no-show.

Based on them showing up at the other lady's house--and causing property damage--this lady now sits in a lawn chair in her front yard, next to a small box holding her six laying hens. She has an elderly parent and a son with autism. Today the son came out to see the chickens. The lady doesn't want the kill squad coming up unannounced.

The lady is still out there. Because she dared to go on FB Live and the news.

I see things on the internet all the time, but I sat there this morning and cried with and for this lady. Letting a disabled kid keep one house chicken indoors won't spread VND.

ETA Channel 7 has once again shown up. You know CDFA, if this is a job you have to do for all Californians, then go ahead and do it. She's not stopping you, Kerri isn't stopping you, and Channel 7 isn't stopping you.

ABC7 followup reporting: Inland Empire chicken owners frustrated with euthanization methods

"Exposed" (within 1-3 km) is considered "infected" but yet the carcasses are taken to the muni landfill, untested, not labeled as haz, and susceptible to rodent/gull predation. Beyond the emotion, that makes people go hmmm.

Anyway, here's KABC's story:

Inland Empire chicken owners frustrated over euthanization methods

MIRA LOMA, Calif. (KABC) -- The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working to eradicate the worst outbreak of Newcastle disease in Southern California in years, a virus that's threatening the poultry industry.

But many Inland Empire residents say they're furious about their birds and chickens being euthanized by state officials, with little information given to them.

"I want proof...If my birds are sick, euthanize them, but if they're not, please leave them alone. They're family pets," said Gina Cruz of Mira Loma, who lives in a so-called "hot zone" where 618 properties have been deemed infected.

However, the CDFA said it's not that easy.

"They're exposed and considered infected," said spokesperson Sandy Cooney of the CDFA. "And that's why they're euthanized."

Cooney said the CDFA is working on building a map where residents can gather more information about the level of infection in their neighborhood, to make the process more transparent.

"We understand that residents need more information, and we're working on a process that will allow them to better understand why their birds have to be euthanized in order to stop the spread of the virus," Cooney said in a statement.

Virulent Newcastle Disease is contagious and fatal to birds and poultry, but it's not a food safety concern. However, it's so virulent, that many birds die without showing signs of infection.

They aren't using that consistently either to spray themselves down.

Another kill scene went FB Live just now. This time CDFA/USDA blocked off the ENTIRE STREET with caution tape before CHP arrived. This again happened at a house with an appointment--that wasn't on FB.

To everyone, imagine someone waits for you to go to work or to pick up your kid before then breaching your property--and you not able to call anyone. The implications are heinous, and however you feel about the quarantine/euth zones, how they're doing it is wrong. Way wrong.

Today, CDFA/USDA rolls up to another property in Riverside. The family has seen kill activity around them and they decide to consent. Four chickens and a small peacock are put in a dog crate, which is moved to their front yard.

Two women, no hazmat, just booties approach and speak to them in English. A daughter informs them that her father only speaks Spanish. They attempt to talk to her only, ignoring the dad. The daughter, in an even keel, says that they have to provide full bilingual services. They keep trying to talk to her only.

The daughter, mid-20s, waves her arms toward the five or so neighbors--mostly white-- who have shown up, some with kids in strollers.

"You see, we have all nationalities here," she says. "But this is a Mexican home. My dad, me, we both agree. Because that's how Mexicans roll."

"This is a Mexican home, and you don't give a f."

The USDA boss, seen before, drives up again. Looks at the chickens penned in the yard. The middle-age ladies with iPhones. The Mexican sister who still has not raised her voice. Her elderly parents. Her children.

They reschedule.

This is a Mexican home. Yesterday, it was a Farsi home. This is our American home. And they don't give a f.

I live close to the area and as far as I know and other people in my area know from the feed store that is not a rumor.
My understanding is someone imported an exotic bird from outside the USA from Beleze(sp) and it was infected. I watched the video of them destroying birds that belonged to a CFR and found it interesting they the men treated them with more compassion then laying hens.

Where the virus came from this time is unknown--it's a cross between CA2002, a Belizean strain and a Honduran strain. It first showed up in a flock of fighting roosters from Compton.

Re. humane euth, it's arbitrary. It's faster when the birds have been cooped, obviously. Of late, some folks have been putting their birds on the front yard. They can't take the birds off prem, and while they owe compliance, they don't have to make their backyard a safe space for them.

That would all be a lot more believable if they were adhering to strict biosecurity measures, testing the birds, and disposing of them in a way which would avoid transmission of the disease... Torn suits that are most likely not changed between properties and open disposal in a land fill makes it just more BS rhetoric... If ANY of the birds actually had the disease (which they don'[t know because they don't test) they are more likely contributing to the spread rather than containing it by entering people's closed properties. I think it is very wise that people are putting the birds in the front yard, since if your birds weren't infected, your property probably would be contaminated by the time those sloppy guys from CDFA left your backyard. And when this nightmare is over you might want to have more chickens, though I believe that some will be saying "never again" at least while living in So Cal. I would take my birds to the street and insist they do the so called "euthanization" there.

They also have been just dumping the bodies in public dumps without any bags or anything...the complete disregard for any bio security if the situation is as serious as they say is just outrageous
