Losing a kidney

#1California Chick :

I hope the tests go well!! I will be thinking of you on Thursday!!

Cindy

I got in for my tests today
I got my chest Xray , EKG and blood draw all done in under 30 min
Now I'm not sure if I'm going straight down to surgery, when he gets that scheduled in Indy or, more likely, I will have another office visit first.

The news I got today was just about as frustrating as no news at all. I got a message that I have an appointment in Indy, in two weeks, with the surgeon who is supposed to be removing my kidney. I don't yet know if the surgery is scheduled the next day or if I have to drive to Indy and come back at some later date. I also have not heard whether I will be seeing an oncologist before the surgery or if the plan is to wait until after.

I'm very sorry that you're having to go through this. Regarding seeing an oncologist...if cancer is likely or if they know it's cancer from the CT scan or MRI, I would think the gold standard of care would include pre-surgery consultation with a urologic surgeon that specializes in kidney cancer, not a regular urologic surgeon, and possibly other urologic oncologists.

Sending all good thoughts your way.

I was told, based on the CT scan that there is about an 85% chance it is malignant. I was also told two weeks ago, to make a list of questions to ask. So now that I have plenty of questions I have had very little opportunity to ask them. That is making me crazy! My urologist told me that surgeon I am being sent to is the chief of minimally invasive surgery at the IU med center. I don't know anything about his background with cancer but my Dr seems to think he is "the guy"!

Not knowing what I am dealing with drives me crazy too. Hang in there kid. Don't let them jerk you around too much. You should be able to get a phone consultation with one of your doctors if you call in and request it soon. Let them know that you really need to have a little peace of mind concerning what you are going through.

Good luck!

If you're not already in contact with a group specific to kidney cancer, there are some really good large yahoo groups that might be a wealth of information and support immediately. It feels terrible to have unanswered questions.

I did get a chance to talk to my urologist today and he confirmed that nothing else is going to happen until after I see my surgeon on July 20th. That has to happen before the surgery is scheduled.
