I have a Genesis incubator 1588 and have a few successful hatches...getting better each time :) This past week on Day16 of my hatch we had a bad storm that caused my electricity to go out. My temp and humidity have been right on all the way through, but on Wed..electricity was out for 2 hours 15 minutes..temp went down to 86....then electric came back on for 45 minutes! temp went back to 100 went off again for 1/2 hour and temp went down to 91...then came back on for an hour...went back to 100 then off again and temp went down to 91 for about an hour...then finally back on permanently!! very stressful....I know I should get at least a little generator for next time...sooooo what do you think? could that low temp and/or the fluctuation of temps hurt my hatch? ruined my hatch? Today is Day 19..so far "I think" I see a few eggs moving a bit but I am not sure if it is just wishful thinking...was wondering if anyone here had any experience or advice for me...

thanks so much,

Rose

I've lost electricity several times when I was incubating.....but not during one hatch. The longest was from 4 am to 11 am. I'm sure it affected my hatch rate some, but I've still had decent hatches those times. I'd be more concerned about the fact that it was several times in one incubation period, I don't know what the repeat cooling and heating will have done to them.....hopefully only slowed them down a bit.

Don't despair! We lost power for about 4 hours one afternoon and temp got down to the mid 80s and I still had a very decent hatch- 5 out of 6 local eggs and 30% of the shipped eggs hatched.

Back in March we had a huge tree fall across the power line. I just happened to have a bator full at the time and it was still a little cool out. Anyway the power was out for 24 hours. During this time I did nothing to the bator but look at it. The temps were lower than the themometor read which I beleive was below 70 degrees. I was sure the hatch was doomed.

Finally the power comes back on and my temps and humitity get back right where they need to be. Then a day later the power goes back out for another 8 hours. O.K. I'm thinking enough is enough here. I did end up with a decent miracle hatch. I couldn't beleive it. Hang in there, I beleive you have a good chance on your hatch. Let us know how it goes for you.

Glad I read this! This is one of my biggest fears.
I was thinking about getting a MinuteMan (a battery back-up mostly used for computers) for mine.
They will keep a pc up & running for about 15 minutes during an outage. I don't know how long a bator would last, but it would have to be way longer because they don't use very much electricity as compared to a pc.

I'm glad so many of you had good hatches with power outages.

Just an update...I have 13 precious chicks :) Today is day 22 so I think that is it...still have 11 that didn't hatch?? but I never candled so I am not sure if they were all fertile...I am expecting some turkeys next week and started my last hatch of the season with guinea eggs as well....I think I'm going to try to keep my humidity a bit lower than last time...I hate taking chances but I guess that is the only way I will learn what works best for me....

Congrats on your hatch! We had a 9 hour power outage in March but we still had a good hatch. The hatch, however, was delayed a few days due to the drop in temps, I'd imagine. We even have a Serama named Trash Can, he was the last to hatch. I almost threw the egg away thinking the hatch was done, nope, he was peeping his little heart out inside the shell a couple of hours later so he went back into the bator and hatched a couple hours after that! Maybe I shoud have named him Lucky
