dog are domesticated wild animals just as chickens are. unfortunatly thay have been domestic for so long they do not know what their instincks are for. they are natural preditors (all breeds no matter how big or small) they dont understand that you kill what you need to eat, they are like a fox or cyote pup that is just learning what "prey" is. but a dog has never had its mother bring it scraps of prey dont understand that it is food, but the dog still has the "kill the prey instinct" it is the humans fault when they allow ther dog to be in the position of killing chickens. i have allways had boarder collies and i make sure they would not be in the potion to kill someones chickens.
i am very sory for your loss. my kids are so excited aout geting there first chickens i cant imagon telling them ther birds were killed by some ones dog. i have a jack russel terrior and i know that i will have to be highly vigilant as that is a breed with a very high kill instinct towards small animalls... i hope he will do well as he does very well with my daughters ferret but i am ALLWAYS watchfull and near when they are playing together

if those dogs have had so many incedences of atacking and killing other pet they NEED to be put down. go to the lockal animal control ofice, even get other neighbors to sign a petion. that problem will only escalate. it sounds as thou theire owner realy dont care what there dogs do and are just compleatly clueless to pet owner responsibility. if the dogs return in the mean time ....shoot them and dont even think twice about it.

I am so so sorry you have been through this. It's just heartbreaking... and while it won't bring back your chickens, this is a number that will really send home a message to your neighbors. It sounds like they are trying to do the right thing, which is incredibly unusual from the stories you read here - What I did was to send copies of the state laws regarding dogs and livestock to each of my neighbors... nearly every state has very strong language about this kind of thing, giving livestock (includes poultry) owners the right to do whatever is necessary to protect your birds... including shooting the dog. (really easy to find these statutes on google - there's a site dedicated to it). I found that when I provided this to my neighbors, they were left to decide for themselves what action I would take in the situation that their sweet family pet was on my property killing or chasing chickens... it has with only one exception, worked. I would also file a complaint about the dogs to the animal control... just to have it on legal record somewhere... again, nothing against your neighbors, who seem to want to do the right thing - this is about protecting yourself. It's their responsibility to restrain their dogs, and a little checkbook therapy will sure go a long way to starting the ball rolling on that behavior. Good for you for coming up with the numbers - you are entirely right to do so.

In a perfect world all dog owners would take care with their dogs. But it ain't a perfect world.

I guess I have some 'splain'in to do. First I do not blame the owner of the chickens, I truly hope he gets every dime he can out of the dog's owner. Yes, his chickens should be safe in his yard. But they weren't, now they are dead.

In the real world, I think Horse Jody's situation where she recieved full compensation is the exception rather than the rule. And if it don't beat all--- even after paying big bucks out, the owners of the 2 dogs still are not keeping them under control.

i don't think you should have your neighbors build a chicken pen, i think you should have them build a dog run. by the sounds of it your chickens were on your property and the dogs were the ones roaming. maybe you should consider hanging steak on the side of your coop?
