Lots of pics: Speckled Sussex X Buff Orp -PIC on pg 1, 2 & 5

The pics Wilds posted are from SS X Black Orps (carrying the mottled gene - from our mottled project). These are 2nd generation, so getting some mille pattern, some mottled, and what looks like lots of incompletes. Leg color is really not an issue, since sussex and orps both have white skin.

Blackbart, the 'reddish' ones should start laying soon, if the season doesn't affect them. The youngins on page 2 have quite a way to go yet.

It must be the contrast in the Sussex that makes their legs look so much more white.

Oh man, I would LOVE to buy that flock of buff crosses. They are the perfect dual purpose hen to me. I love RIR, but they never sit like the ones my grandparents used to have, so these look enough like reds and would be a great meat bird too!

Very interesting thread. Good luck with the project...chicken genetics are cool!

Thanks Tony!

stuckinthecity - these would make terrific multi purpose birds. I would imagine with the sussex/buff orp cross they would be good layers, temperament, meat quality and even some broodies as well.

cwhit- When they only have one dose of mottling, it usually disappears on the adult plumage because its a recessive gene. Once they have 2 copies (next generation), we should see good 'speckling' on adult plumage.

Thanks KyBlue - we try to keep it fun and something we'll enjoy, as well as learn in the process. I'm glad you enjoy them too.

MP - I've got my stealth defender on and me ladies aren't going anywhere just yet. lol

Could you outline the differences (not color of course) between the Speckled Sussex and the Buff Orps? Folks talk of different body types, I'm still trying to learn. Thanks.

Beautiful birds by the way!
