Lots of sick chickens

Still waiting for the oxine to get here. Local Tractor Supply has been out of Tylan 50 for a week now. Everywhere else they don't carry it or they have the higher dose. So no clue what to do there. I did however try some liguid bluing in my splash rooster water, within two days his eye swelling(that was completely closed) has went down! The colds seem to be less now, so lets hope the warm shop and the meds continue to help!

Again, most chicken respiratory diseases are viral so Tylan or other antibiotics will do no good, and your chickens can build resistance so they won't be effective if they actually need them You really need to find out what they have.

dare i say this. but IF your birds really have a respiratory illness, and only a vet's BILL will tell you that, you may be wasting money on treatment for the unknown.

most respiratory illnesses--if not ALL--are sort of permanent things. the birds remain carriers and, in the case of CRD, pass it on to offspring through the egg. other diseases will just reappear when conditions are right, since the bird remains a carrier.

some people, at least, would cull the whole flock. i suspect this is out of the question for you, as they are pet-like. but a vet bill could buy you hundreds of chicks.

some may be angry with this message, but i just wanted to offer it.

best of luck to you.

I'm just going to post in support of what John has said above. I was reading through the thread with the intent of posting the same when I finally came to his answer. It takes quite a bit of gall to say what needs to be said, but what is hard to say in these situations -- especially here, where so many are very much attached to their birds as pets and family members. But, imo, his recommendation is spot on.

I have the same thing started in my pet-egg layers all of them.24. I called the NPIP rep. and he said to start on Duramycin a broad spectrum antib. In 4 days if they are not better he is going to come out and culture them. If they have CRd or other inf. that will not go away but become permanent I will with many tears

cull my loving flock. I do not want anything to suffer.......

He said if so I will need to wait 90 days before starting a new flock. I am hoping it is just an irritation from the 1 degree weather and the snow we had and still have

. This has sure started off as a winter to remember. My flock has many ages in it. from 20 weeks to 4 years old. I have never had any resp. problem till now. Very few were brought in and they were baby chicks that were segregated for many Months. I understand the CRD can also come through eggs. Yikes

I did not know that till now. Good luck everyone.

I am so sorry! That's definitely a sad stressor on a good wholesome family life! I'll pray for you.

But I have to put in this silver lining: isn't this the makings of a Very Interesting 4H project? Document everything that happened, everything you do, the best and worst outcomes, and make a project brochure or Disease/Emergency Poultry Plan. We all could sure use one! I bet there's even prize money for such a project at the county or state fair.

I haven't had a single kid actually do 4H, though I've brought them to it. But our 5th grade class has 3 4H kids who won prize money at last years' fair for projects.

There are some respiratory illnesses from which your chickens can recover, but then will be carriers for life. Depending on how you feel about your flock, you don't need to cull. Just close your flock, no new ones in, no adopting chickens out. Enjoy your chickens while you have them. When they have all passed on, follow your vet or the State Vet's advice on decontamination procedures before starting a new flock. There are some viruses that are very fragile in the environment and others that hang on for a while.

i'm so sorry crazyhen and nancy/pets. i know the terror of seeing your beloved pets become ill and not knowing what to do. i hope you both can get your birds, or at least one bird tested so you know what you're dealing with.

Just to let everyone know, I did call the 4H leader Tuesday and she has not gotten back to me yet. I am going to try and call her again over the weekend, I am not one that likes to keep bugging someone. I will not kill/cull my chickens unless I really have to. We will find this out when I finally get hold someone who can help with this. I will give every living creature a chance to live and get better. Everything deserves a chance!

When and if I would have to kill/cull my birds( I have already told my kids this might have to be done) there will not be nothing here for awhile!!!!!!!!!!!!!
