Well two years ago, I had twenty five silkie banties out in a pen with a small coop. I had a tarp over the top. But during the day, these guys/gals wanted to free range. They went out in snow, cold and even an ice storm. None got sick. So it makes me wonder whether what these chickens are getting is from straight cold. It might be if they are getting wet and have no where to get into. JMO!

My hens are in a large coop about 8x 18 with an outside dried in area and then a long run of 12x48ft. They do not go out in the long run when it has snowed but do go in the roofed area. I keep the coop clean as I can. I was away for two weeks due to being gone to the coast when the first snow hit. I had a lady here who feed and watered everyday. Something may have gotten to them at that time. She had two other people feed up for her while the snow was deep and I know my security could have been breached. That is what has me worried. The first hen had labored breathing really bad and clear lig. being shaken from her nose. I isolated immed. Now a bunch have the runny nose but no labored breathing. I increased the coops warmth with a light or two and closed off quite a bit of the ventilation area. It was a bit windy on some days. they have now been on the duramycin for 24 hrs but I don't know yet if it is doing anygood. Duramycin is suppose to kill more germs than Tylan. We will see. Thanks for your advice. I will look into the Oxine as soon as I can. Gloria Jean

Ventilation is very important. as long as there is no draft then I'd keep the ventilation open is it at the top of their coop? Hopefully you'll see a turnaround soon, I will never be without Oxine now that I have found it.

Oxine came! Now my question is how much to put in a gallon jug of water, can i mist them with this and give them some in their water? Do I need the activator crystals or citric acid for this?

www.shagbarkbantams.com/oxine.htm will give you all info. Use 61/2 oz to 1 gal and mist all your birds that are sick 3 times a day for 10 days is what is prescribed on this site. I put 1/8th tea. into 1 gallon of water everyother day ACV the other day I also mist all my chickens and ducks once a week with 1/8 tea. to gallon of warm water. And spray out their coops also. I just use a spray bottle that you can buy at any garden store I bought mine at Freds. Do not use the activator or citric acid when treating or using around birds.
