What do you plan on doing with them? You're gonna let them out in your chicken yard? This last hatch will go out in the chicken yard. I hope they don't run away.![]()
Yep. I'm going to keep them penned up with the chicks that I have now. I've sold my Golden Cuckoos & Speckled Sussex so they will have there own coop & run. Then I'm going to just let them do there own thing. Everybody I've talked to said if you keep them penned till their mature they will stick around, So I guess we'll see!!
How is it working with your older group??
So sad... The hubs went to take care of the turkeys when he got home yesterday and found 3 of the Narragansetts dead. Can't see anything wrong with them. I know they say turkeys are harder to raise but geez they were 6 & 8 weeks old! Keeping my fingers crossed that we don't lose anymore.
Oh yea I remember that!! Well they have 30 acres to range on so I will just take the chance. The lady I got the eggs from said she started training them with white millet. She said she'd go in there and hollar "Guinea Millet!!" everytime she gave it to them and says when she lets them out all she has to do is hollar that and they all come running!!The older group is still penned. Remember when I posted that one fly out of their pen. Well he flew about an acre away and the turkeys had to heard him back home. When I saw that, I knew that they would not say in the chicken yard. I'm not sure what to do with them. I want to clip their wings but I hate to do that. It is definitely possible for them to remain in a person's chicken yard. I have seen it before. Years ago when I first got some, they stayed in the yard and free ranges but when laying season came, they ran off to the wooded areas to lay their eggs and hatch and I never saw them again. I had 25 of them.![]()
I can't wait to put this hatch in the chicken yard to see what they will do.
That is crazy!! My hubs said he's gonna process the extra males too!!Out of all of the turkey poults that were hatched this year, I think only 2 were female and the rest were male. What are the odds that would happen.Almost everyone who placed their order last year has picked up their turkeys. I still have a lot left. I have never processed any turkeys but I'm thinking about processing some of the males. I have about a million left.
I'm thinking about buying a grinder and making turkey sausage and turkey patties. I don't eat "Thanksgiving Turkey" but I think I will try one this year to compare the taste. I think I have 21 turkeys left that were hatched this year. And that's not counting the nest of 20 that my girl is setting on. I kinda hope those don't hatch.![]()

I'm sure they got wet cause truthfully these things are to stupid to get in the coop to get out of it!! I was wondering about that also!!OH NO!!! Sorry to hear that. And yes they are sooooooooo much harder to raise but at 6 & 8 weeks, they have passed that "hard to raise" age. I wonder what happened to them. They didn't get wet did they? Did you all have bad weather there on yesterday?
