I like the way you think

Mike, I candled my turkey egg --- and --- YES!! I've got a baby!

I don't know what momma goose is doing with her Pekin eggs. She stayed on the nest for a whole week but now she seems to stay off the nest more than she stays on it. I don't think she's serious about hatching these eggs. I'm going to go out and candle them this evening to see if there's any development.

Also, I have three saddleback eggs in the incubator that are developing and are due to hatch the first week in May. Hopefully, my re-engineered bators will do a better job than the stillairs did. So far -- so good! I think one of the problems that I've been having with the goose eggs in the Little Giants is that because the eggs are so large they end up being too close to the heating element. This electronic thermostat creates a very gentle warm breeze across the eggs. I'm convinced it should improve the hatches for my geese.

This evening I made my Sebastopol goose get off her nest so that I could candle her eggs. She's a sweet girl! She grumbled some but let me remove her from the nest. I was pretty sure that she was NOT doing a good job incubating these eggs. For the last couple of days I've noticed her off the nest quite a bit during the day. Candling of the eggs revealed 8 out of 10 eggs had "Bulleyes & spider web veins".

I quickly apologized to Mother Goose as apparently she knows what she's doing.

Mike, I guess I'll be having some Pekins before long.

I LOVE mayhaw jelly!

Mayhaw jelly is my fav too! my trees aren't old enough to produce yet so I still have to barter eggs to get some.

Congrats everybody on the beautiful chicks & Amylou your garden is beautiful!

Up at the crack of dawn to find that the back door on the chicken tractor came open during the night - guess some idiot (that would be me) didn't latch it all the way. Thank goodness Romeo, my silver pied peacock, alerted me to the fact the chicklets were out - he was fanning them through the fence while they peeked back at him, just fascinated. So I got out the net & put the escapees back into their tractor.

Have a great rest of the weekend & enjoy this nice weather!

I have tried several times to propagate my Mayhaws with small success,. I finally got a tree from a cutting but it's still young and wont be producing for a while,.. I've never gotten seeds to grow but once and it died.

I am going to try my hand at grafting one this year,.. can't give up,.. I like them too much

Terri Ann I think bartering is cool,.. eggs for mayhaw jelly ,.. sounds like you're getting a good deal! How long till your trees are producing?

I am sooo glad the escapee's are back where they belong!

Ya'll there is a recipe for Mayhaw ice cream here that I'm gonna try this year,..http://mayhaw.org/original/recipes.html

Don't those chicks tickle?

How long did it take your trees to start producing? Mine are only a couple years old. No signs of anything yet.

Funny "muscadine" story: we had a muscadine vine on an old section of fence for years. Never did anything to it, finally it started fading. I picked up what was supposed to be a Thompson green seedless grapevine at Walmart (I know, big mistake)! & planted it next to the old muscadine.

Well I guess they cross-pollinated or something, because now I get these grapes that strongly resemble scuppernongs -- they are green, grow on single stems like muscadines, have seeds like muscadines, and the flavor of the jelly is like a muscadine.

I make jelly out of them every year & throw a cup of grape juice into the mix so the color will be pretty - otherwise it's sort of a - mud - color, not very appealing at all!

I'm pulling out my bator this morning & start burning it in, will set eggs tomorrow. I'm tired of the utility room being clean & straight; time to mess it up w/chicks again.

Ours took about 4-5 years to get right but started flowering after about 3

Yea not sure on the tickle lol but sure is alot more work. I think I have about 100 or so blrw/marans/ameraucana/pekin/rp/lav am/and mallard along with another 50 or so various chickies and duckies.

I've been thinking about putting some mayhaw cuttings in the ol mist bed. If any of you want me to root some of them just let me know. I'll get some after my FIL 's trees drop their fruit and there's always room for more cuttings. He makes wine with his and it's also muddy colored.

I had more chicks to hatch out and now there are too many in the aquarium. When one would go for a drink all of them would bounce around like ping pong balls

There are several more in the bator now and a few more pipped this morning so it's way past time to get the trough out.
My bantam hatched last night but still hasn't opened it's eyes. Does this happen often? Think it's under-formed? It's still in the same spot, peeping and otherwise normal looking.

Gosh, all this talk of Mayhaw trees, and Muscadines --- I'm getting hungry! I don't have any yet but hope to plant some before too long. One of my neighbors in Abbeville used to make a Mayhaw Cheesecake that was very good.

Terri, some of the Muscadines need another vine for pollination because they are not self pollinating. It looks like you found the right combination.
