"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Today was my first 5 egg day!

not sure who is all laying but I've got a good idea. Four out of six of my original girls are laying. Out of the four chickens my husbands friend gave us, one is laying for sure and her daughter, the broody, was laying but I don't think she has the last two days. The other two I don't think they are laying but I'm not sure if they are not old enough or maybe they are older and don't lay anymore...possibly getting over a molt or something? The "friend" that gave them to us had over 50 and was moving so he was trying to find homes . He had no idea how old the birds were or anything. They all had signs of leg mites too. How can I tell how old they are? Any ideas? I think they've been here long enough (3-4 weeks) that it shouldn't be the stress of a new home to make them stop.

Woohoo, I have 13 that are in the process of starting. I got 3 tiny eggs today. The girls have settled down and no longer run from me. I can actually lean down and pet them.

On a side note, Blooie on the front porch swing said that she bakes her eggs in the shell.  Instead of boiling them.  They peel like a dream.  350 for 20 min or so.  Just a thought.

Just put them on a sheet pan? No water or anything?

My original girls absolutely love me. How do I know this, you ask? Well it's because they follow me around talking and complaining about their day even when I DONT have the treat bucket! :lau ;). They also line up to do the squat thing for me.. It's so funny and my husband is jealous because they don't squat for him. LOL. My new girls are still afraid of me but I don't think they much individual interaction with their previous owner so they may never warm up to me.

Good idea but my little cooker steamed them in 5 minuets. So it will save money too in the long run. Pam

What is the Wisconsin thread y'all are talking about and what are we trying to beat them for?

That's the thread for people who live in Wisconsin to meet up online and share regional information and stories, just as this one is for people in Louisiana. It's all in good fun that we would want to prove ourselves to be more active with the BYC online community.

Just trying to keep in touch with other Louisiana chicken people.

It's people from that state like us. Usually either Wisconsin or us la-yers would have the most activity on BYC . We just wanted to be number one.
My hubby didn't do a head count last night so tonight I was closing up. My black australorp hen that just started laying has disappeared. Yesterday I only got 4 eggs and one hen was in the dogs yard so I'm sure whatever happened , happened yesterday. That sucks I'll be doing the headcount from now on. Even tho I think it happened yesterday in broad daylight. That coon my neighbor feeds had 5 babies.time to get the trap out. I think I'm going to tell her I'm going to shoot them instead of bringing them to the swamp . Maybe I can get her to quite with putting feed out for them. Every year I lose some to her coon. Now I just bought these expensive rare breeds. I'm not loosing them to these coons.

I sat for a while with my three month old Rhode Island Reds today. I gave the friendliest one to a close friend of mine, who was absolutely in love, so I'm now down to 5. I'm almost certain that I have one cockerel and four pullets. The little cockerel is starting to get his shiny, pointy hackle and saddle feathers. None of the others are showing any similar signs, so I'm crossing my fingers and toes that my guess is correct. They've started their first molt, and I'm finding bunches of feathers in their pen.

We also hatched some Barred Rock and Silkie chicks over the past few days! Its so nice to hatch chicks again. Our incubator has been empty for the past few months.
