Are raised beds easier to work with as opposed to planting in the ground? No weeds to pull with raised beds right? Please tell me NO WEEDS!

Julie they are easier and will not have weeds atleast the first year if you put down the weed guard cloth first then you HAVE to get uninfested topsoils which usually means bought by the sack. As all dirt is going to have a certain amount of weed/grass seed in it the only way to get them out or kill them is to sterilize it (imagine that process in detail) Look on amazon and get the Square foot gardening book by Mel Bartholomew it is not very expensive and it will give all the info you need to grow just enough for you and plenty to put up every season or even twice a year of you do the fall stuffs.

The horses owner stopped by my house to talk. He's an older gentleman and was crying about Sandy. I suggested as an option for Odie (the 20ish horse). I would have the vet check him over, give him his shots, and an updated Coggins. After a "quarantine" period, if they were interested, I would bring Odie over to one of my pastures and put him with my old gelding (Star 24yrs...the BEST kids horse EVER!!) so that Odie would have some company and not be alone. I have NO interest in owning Odie, he is not rideable, I simply didn't want him to be lonely. The owner said that he and his wife would really like that idea, but he wasn't sure about his 30 or 40 yr old daughter, who I have NEVER met in 16 yrs...who I could stand right next to in Walmart and never know...who NEVER comes out to even look at the horses...

Did I mention she lives 15 minutes away?????????

He wasn't sure she would want Odie to be off the property.. AAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!! I told him if it helped she could stop by any time she wanted. I don't want the horse, if Odie comes here, it's simply more work for me. I just thought it was the right thing to offer....PEOPLE ARE STUPID!!!!

Ok rant is done...I might be a little more hostile than normal today...I like the old gentleman, it's his daughter that's the TWIT!!! I wonder if SHE tweaks and twerks? Might explain a few things??

He can't be alone, there is such a thing of dying of a broken heart and insanity from no socialization. She will most likely never come over, so what she thinks should not matter.

Sounds neat. I will look into it next.
Are heirloom seeds and non-GMO seeds the same thing? I have gotten a lot of seeds from: www.anniesheirloomseeds.com and have always been pleased.

Technically speaking......I don't know. But I view heirlooms as ones that have been around for many generations and haven't been mucked around with. So unless someone is discovering new varieties in the wild........someone correct me if I am wrong.

Also If anyone is interested in buying non-GMO seeds for your gardening. I discovered a neat seed club that sends out only non-GMO seed. I was a member for about 9 months and I love all the seeds they sent me. They have a fb page and a website. They also send out email newsletters. I did not renew my membership last month because I have plenty of seed. But I sure will renew it when I need more. There is more info on their website about how they work things.

Neat link! I have enough for now but I may sign up for their overstock plan at 9.99 for a lifetime. They have some pretty good advice on there too.

Weeds go everywhere!  :/  But my raised beds are a little better than the ones that are not.

In case anyone is interested I just saw this free book on amazon

Question for you canning experts.........

When canning tomatoes/salsa, etc. do you add "additives or preserves" to the food to help it with preserving? Is there such a thing as "natural preserving" and not having to use anything besides the fruit or vegetable that you are canning?

And exactly how long can preserves/canned foods last? 20 years? 30 years? 50 years?
I add lemon juice to mine to raise the acidity level. I have my recipes at home for my salsa & tomato juice- remind me & I'll print them out for you. Every time I put up salsa or whatever I write down what I did!

I don't know how long preserved foods last - usual advice is to use them within a year of putting them up. Foods dried & vac-sealed will last 2 years.
