Good morning La-yers! boy this thread has died! How's everybody doing?

No sign of mama guinea. My cousins will be harvesting the soybeans this weekend so I'm hoping that flushes her out of hiding - if, she still is hiding

:frow    It has been quiet on the thread!  Watch what I can do...    I'm going to stir the pot!!!  However, it will be on something that I need to learn about.  I'll post below...

I am going to "blue kote" my golden laced polish this morning...poor girl!  Hopefully that will work.

You pot stirrer. :gig

Hey All...  What's your thoughts on "common core" in the education system?  My kids school has switched over to it this year, and I REALLY don't like some of what I'm seeing.  In particular, there has been some funky Math!  I need to educate myself more before I go to the school with this.    I do know that people are very passionate about it...

What's common core?

When I went out yesterday morning to let the girls out, they were already out. It actually took me a moment to realize that I had not locked them up the night before. I was lucky, I counted beaks and everyone was there. The other morning the hardware cloth was bowed out on one of the coops as though something with hands tried to pull the coop door open (possum or coon??).
My bunnies came back from 2 days at the vet getting fixed. They had big appetites and twitched their noses to say in bunny language "whew, let's not do that again!"

So, we have found out that we fall apart without our esteemed leader, Kuntrygirl. Glad you are ok and back with us!!

My health insurance provides free gyms. So, this morning I will try "gentle yoga".

So, good morning. And, how are you.

You locked them up alreaight,. it's just that you have a smart butt that unlcokced the coop and let everyone out.

Glad that the bunnies are back and doing ok.

Me? Leader? :lau Oh, I beg to differ. I am NO example for anyone. My weakness are fires, mixing wines, smarty pants, i don't hold my tongue (smart mouth), wreckless, borderline hoarder when I find too many sales or free stuff and too much more to mention. I hope no one follows along in my footsteps. I'm a recipe for disaster. :gig

You have a great insurance if they offer free gyms. Ours ofrers $25.00 monthly cost and free enrollment. I wish ours offered free. Let me know how the gentle yoga was.

I agree about the lack of parental involvement. Even in the private schools you see it, though not as much as some public. I don't like to paint with a broad brush. We have those parents that want to be "big fish in small pond"...they are the ones that don't do anything, because it's beneath them. Me, I don't want to "chair" anything, just tell me what needs to be done, and let's figure out how to do it.

When my oldest was going into kindergarten, I went to see the public school for our area, I cried! Then I looked up and saw that they were almost on "academic probation". (The school is doing better now, however, I'm not moving the kids. It's a strange distance thing that's hard to explain. Their public school is 18 miles in the opposite direction of where we work/ build. I have factored in gas cost into our private school equation). At that point, I started looking at private. I found the one I loved, then found out how much it cost and cried again. Then I found the one we are at. It's not fancy. My husband and I bust our butts to be able to afford it. Overall I like what I see, and this new "stupid Math" will change. The school is really good about listening to the parents. We just have to make enough noise.

The best school I have dealt with outside of private was a magnet school. Those I think are great. We lived in Texas near the Arkansas border at the time, all kids could choose from one of 5 at each school level on either side of the border. I choose elementary (pre-k to 5Th there) for my daughter at the science and math biased one. The school had it where the parents would come into the classroom once a month and discuss the teaching plan for the next month and what the parents would like to see change. These were public schools but the competition between them kept them going strong, parents were required to participate at least in sending letters if they didn't attend these meetings. I think that keeping everyone informed helped form a better school for everyone involved.

Need at least one in every group...

People are up? I missed the memo... There is nothing common about common core, didn't you know common sense went out the window years ago. These kids are graduating HS knowing less than what I learned in kindergarten. It's just a ploy to buy a few more years without parents jumping down their throats. If there is anything you want your kids to learn it is best to teach them yourself and use school to teach them social skills (something the teachers have no control over).

Some of the parents are really up in arms over this change.  My two boys go to a catholic school, and I'm not sure what I think about some of this.  I almost feel sorry for the school office, they have been getting so many phone calls on this.  Overall I'm pleased with their school.  I'm just seeing some "funky" Math.  It was teaching them (2nd grade) that when they want to add 23 + 57 =    They should do the following:

        20+50= 70
          3+7= 10
        70+10=80

Why can't they just add 23+57?
I've got a call into the Dean of Academics to discuss.  I can't tell you how many friends/parents called me about it last night.

We also have a new Religion teacher for their grade.  She's teaching them things that are just too "over their head" and not age appropriate for 2nd grade.  The study guides for the second grade tests look like 4th or 5th grade study guides!  Next phone call...:/

I agree with you about the "common sense"...it's not so common these days!!!

Speaking of simple math, I was at TSC the other day and a cashier had an override and the custmoer was owed change. The male cashier had to call the manager on shift to subtract what the customer was owed. I asked the other cashier was he serious and could he not subtract. She looked at me and shruged her shoulders. I could not belive it. I shook my head in amazement. What has happened to our kids where they can't subtract. :/

That's what her maid is for!

They seem like nice people...I just wouldn't want something that big...I don't have a maid (unless I put a uniform on).

Too old for that!

If I could afford a maid she would run away at the sight of the house. It's not messy, it just looks about as run down as one of those old haunted houses in the movies. Heck, as it is my exterminator threatens to bring matches to "help" me rebuild rather than have me move out of his area.

The cash registers used to crash at least once a week where I managed and people thought it was cruel that I would make them preform simple adding and subtracting as part of an interview. It is more common than you think. I once had a girl that couldn't do it WITH a calculator. Needless to say she didn't get hired.
