"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

What could make a girl happier on this Sunday than a big set of shelves??!!! My hubby brought me a big, sturdy set of shelves for my canned foods. I filled them! And there are still more jars to put on there BUT its not a good idea to stack jars directly on top of jars(the experts say). I guess the idea is that you may not know if a seal breaks.....if you have other jars directly on top pressing down. So we are going to put a spacer in on two of the shelves......so we have 2 more shelves

hahaha! I didn't realize how many jars of various canned foods we had, since I have been storing them in a few different places. I quit counting today when I got over 200.

Don't judge! lol! But if Wal-Mart burnt down we would have food for a long time!

That's the problem with canning...It is so addicting that you end up with more than you thought. That was sweet of your husband to bring you a sturdy set of shelves! Just remember to rotate.

Well, I went to sneak those 2 last eggs out from under my broody last night and was surprised to find another fluff ball. She has been on and off the nest all day teaching the chicks and I thought it had gotten too cool and it had been too late to hatch. Should have trusted my broody. She let me take the shell but kept taking the egg back. She thinks it is still good so I will let it be as long as there is no smell.

leave it! I did the same thing I took the 2 eggs & cracked them found 2 fully developed chicks, if I would have left them along they would have hatched also. I would of had 4 chicks. But my broody leghorn is setting again on some eggs, not to sure when she stole them but I have to watch her she keeps taking more eggs, Guessing she will hatch them at the end of the month, just in time for my son's wedding! Sorry Son can't make your wedding my chicks or hatching! will be their Mommy can take care of her chicks while I celebrate my son & his brides marriage

This is so true about people who don't work for their money. I find people don't have pride anymore. They are happy to work the system. When Ron and I first got married we started our business with 300.00. Being the new masonry co. In town work would come to a stop every jan. To march so no work no pay. We were to proud to get gov. Assistance or ask our parents or anyone else for help. We ate a lot of beans and rice and peanut butter an jelly . Ron doesn't care to eat beans an rice very much any more. Now we make a good living but I have never forgotten the hard times. I try to stock up on sales and save money. You never know when or if hard times will hit again. Now if it was to happen the gov. May not be there to help. We too were affected by Katrina . We came back on the 4th day after their wasn't any assistance here and we didn't expect any. We moved trees with our own equipment. Didn't get paid to do it. We brought supplies with us. Our neighbor stayed so we knew he would need supplies. We were happy to help when we could. What upset me was if you didn't have insurance the gov. Paid your rent , gave grants to build your home back. People are still getting grants to raise their homes. If you had insurance but high hurricane deductible mine is 500.00 during hurricane 9800.00. You were offered a loan. I'm the one paying taxes in large amounts so they can take my taxes an give it to others and offer me a loan. It makes me crazy just thinking about it. FYI I didn't take the loan I did without nonessentials and used savings. This was for Katrina , gustav, and Isaac . Let's pray for no more direct hits I need time to replenish the savings. Pam

Great post! It seems these days that "people" are rewarded more for NOT doing what they are supposed to do, rather than doing what is RIGHT and RESPONSIBLE! Something for nothing...

Well "Mother knows best" ! My broody just laid her first egg since deciding to set yesterday. Took her 10 weeks but hey, she's been busy.

Neat!! You'll have to take a picture once you get it all set up. It would be a great series for your blog.

My plan is to get 100 broilers. A couple guys that have pluckers have told me that I can borrow their pluckers, so I want to having a plucking weekend when that time comes. :lau

My plan is to construct an outside pen, away from the toher animals, for them to free range all day and I want to feed organic feed but I have to find where to buy it. I want these birds to be 100% organic or as close to organic as possible. I don't use any pesticides or chemicals on my grass or soil, so they won't be eating any crap. I'll have to figure how much feed 100 broilers will eat in 6 - 8 weeks. I'm sure I will lose some before them but I'll try my best.

Now your talking my language. I feed all organic. This is the first year feeding commercial organic food. They just started selling it at O'Keeffe's in Covington. Its not cheep but either is buying organic eggs 5.99 a dozen or organic chicken at 3.99 a pound.

I was thinking it was cheaper when I bought the grains in bulk and made my own feed. Well I went to the store I was in for a shock all the prices have gone up. Some by a 1.00 per lb.

I do want to do broilers but I'm not set up yet with another yard or coops. Hoping for next year . Plus I need a deed doer.

I'll look and post the brand of food tomorrow. Maybe you could buy it whole sale. Pam

I will have to call around locally to get pricing on organic feed. As far as the set up, I will build a chicken tractor (will try to build it myself) to keep the broilers in for 8 weeks. I have been reading about raising broilers and I have to make sure that I am familiar with how much they eat on a daily basis so that I can estmiate how much I will be paying for feed.
