"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Awwwwwwwwwww. Sorry to hear that.

X 2. I've had zero hatch rate on shipped eggs before. It sucks.

OK I thought people were ready to go home on Friday afternoons. You know, start their weekend? So why are these clowns here still hanging around? HIT THE CLOCK PEOPLE! GO HOME! So I can finish payroll and start MY weekend!! :barnie

Well, I went to sneak those 2 last eggs out from under my broody last night and was surprised to find another fluff ball. She has been on and off the nest all day teaching the chicks and I thought it had gotten too cool and it had been too late to hatch. Should have trusted my broody. She let me take the shell but kept taking the egg back. She thinks it is still good so I will let it be as long as there is no smell.

Great job mama!!! Yeah!!!

Oooooooooooo. That is scary. I plan on putting it far away from the house. Thanks for the tip on the fire.

So you do have a limit on the FIRE thing!!:lau Pam

Yes, I have a limit. I don't burn live animals or people. I DO burn trash, leaves, sticks, branches, ant piles, and other things laying around in the yard. My wish is to burn a car one day to see how quickly it will explode.

I will have to call around locally to get pricing on organic feed. As far as the set up, I will build a chicken tractor (will try to build it myself) to keep the broilers in for 8 weeks. I have been reading about raising broilers and I have to make sure that I am familiar with how much they eat on a daily basis so that I can estmiate how much I will be paying for feed.
Keep us posted what you find out! I still want to try doing it too, but will need to wait until spring. I HAVE to get work situated and my house ready to be put on the market!!! You know how life happens, and things get put on back burner? Well, my house is NOT ready to "show" yet!! It's driving me CRAZY!! (ok, crazier...I'll be honest).

Thanks.

100 broilers sounds like a lot and IT IS but I think I can handle it for 8 weeks. I will try to document daily as far as feeding, behaviors, problems, etc. so if I have any problems that I need to be addressed, I will know how to handle it the next time that I think about raising broilers. I wll be ordering them in Nocember and they should arrive in January 2014. The weather will be cool (hopefully cold), so I won't have to worry any heat issues.

Now I have to look into packaging them in the freezer. I have read a few threads and saw pics on how to package them. Looks easy. :/

I would vacuum seal Them.

I was thinking the same thing.

I also put together a small container with mealworms. Didn't I read that someone else on here grows them too? I got a small container of 50 at Petsmart for $2.50. They seem happy so far. Lol, well they are eating and moving around anyway. I have just been thinking that the fresh ones must have more nutrition than the freeze dried ones. Maybe that's not true. But if I can grow them they sure will be cheaper anyway. I'm all for that!
I have a fairly decent sized mealworm farm. This a picture of my old set-up: I have added 5 more drawers since this picture was taken. I started with 2,000 of them in February 2012 and can't even begin to tell you how many I have now. I sell them and my bedding mix at the Covington swaps every month (250 for $4.00, 500 for $7.50, and 1000 for $14.00) as well as feed them out to my birds. They are very easy and relatively maintenance free to raise.
Love the setup.

Oh, please be sure to post.  I'm in Covington every weekday dropping/picking up my kids from school.  It's better I have my heart attack now over the price, than in the store.  This way, I'll  have time to "adjust".  :/

It's called natures grown organics it is certified organic. It cost 38 bucks but like I said organic eggs are 5.99. The brand that is organic and pasture raised are 6.99 a dozen. So I feel I get my money back in eggs, good to eat and I can sell for more money. I do wish we could do a co-op or something to get it cheaper. Pam

$38.00?????????? WOW !!!!!!!
