"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

If you want and can, you could perform an autopsy to see if anything was indeed stuck, or if it was illness. Knowing whether it was the former or latter could help you protect the others. That's the only thing I can think of if that was the only symptom you noticed

""WARNING""..................... GRAPHIC PICTURE BELOW.........

Ok. So I opened the bird up. I'm no chicken doctor but the intersection of the trachea to the lungs doesn't look right to me although I've nothing to compare to. I found no foreign matter or blockage.

Edit: After doing some searching it appears the syrinx(intersection of trachea and bronchi) is normal. The narrowing of the syrinx is one reason excess dust can cause respiratory problems with chickens. It can easily become blocked. Why this bird died I haven't a clue. I did notice the crop was empty, not a speck of food was in it. This may be more info than ya'll wanted.(sorry :))

I shrink bagged the cockerels today.

A couple got a little beat up in the plucker so they got cooked today.
Sampled a drumstick and these guys are delicious and flavorful.
I'm hooked! Feels good to be eating something I raised.

Hey, guys, tomorrow is the surgery date. I've been so sick I was afraid the bloodwork would be off and they would cancel. But they never called so I'm going.

Hope every is okay. You all are in my thoughts. :D:D

So ya'll I lost one of me 6 week old Bielefelder cockerels last night. I noticed yesterday that it was making a sound as it was breathing. Like it's airway was blocked or something. It had only been about 24 hrs of moving them out of the brooder. I suspect something was going on before they were moved because it happened so fast. The bird looked and acted healthy. I'll be keeping an eye on the others. Thought I should mention it in case someone had a suggestion.

Pam good to see you online. Thinking of you, your family and your Father.

Thanks Cody! they will hide illness. I know others that lost young birds last night. I went out to check on my 7 week olds a few were screaming in distress so I picked them up their feet were cold and they were shivering. So I picked them up and back to broder with heat. All survived, Wet ground, and cold weather kills young chicks. He might have had an issue before but the weather didn't help. Glad if it had to be one it was a spare cockeral. Hope to be back full time in a week. Pam
