"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Sry I haven't been chiming in. I am in Georgia, my Mom passed away yesterday and I had come to be with her before she passed. But, I had to share with all of you a pic my husband sent me this afternoon of our first egg. And it is from our WL that had her comb damaged by our randy roo. My Mom would've loved to have seen that pic. She was waiting on her own first egg but the chickens weren't cooperating.
edited to add a pic of it in my husband's hand for reference. It is a nice size for a first egg]

Sorry to hear about your mother, it is so hard to lose a parent.
That is a nice size for sure.

hello evryone,

I think y wife, 3 kids and myself are finally going to take the plunge into having a brood of our own. Where in my area do we go to get baby chicks? i figured on going to Jefferson Feed on Jefferson Hwy. is that a good place? any suggestions? i will take all the info i can get since this will be our first go at it. we helped my father in law in mexico with his on his ranch, but it will be our first together without him since he has passed away a few years back.

Welcome to BYC and to chickens! What area are you in? There's pretty much a member in every corner of the state, and a few in the middle. ;)

What kind of flock are you looking to have? Eggs or meat? Friendly pets? There are lots of breeds that can do all three. :)

Welcome to the Layers thread Awakened One.

It depends on what type of birds you want and what your goal is.
I wouldn't rush out just yet and buy some. Do plenty of research first. There's a ton of different breeds.

Do you have a coop yet? Are you going to build or buy one.

One word of caution there's a term we use around here called "Chicken Math". It's when you can't stop adding birds to your flock. The flock just keeps growing until you have too many chickens. In other words it can be addictive.

You'll get plenty of help here. Just ask away when you need it.

If I ever get a good-looking replacement, he's out the door. He's a good roo and gorgeous, but I've got little kids.

You know why shepards have a shepards hook when you see pics of them? You take the curved end to grab the chickens by the feet pull them to you. I don't have a curved one yet but will get Ron to make one. I use a straight one now to separate them or guid them to a coop etc.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my father a few months ago. It will get better. Great first egg big for one too.

How many do you want? Are you in Metairie ? How many will the city allow? Do you want eggs, meat ,or both? There's a lot to think about an do before buying chicks from the feed store. Feed store chicks are breed to lay lots of eggs for about 2 to 2 1/2 years. Heritage breeds from breeders will lay a good amount of eggs weekly but not every day, they will lay for more years tho. Hope that makes sense. Pam

My dad is visiting this week, and today he took this picture of me with my favorite EE cockerel. I toted that baby around for almost an hour, teaching the kids about roosters and letting them pet him. He's a good roo. We took lots of selfies. :lau

I would much rather heritage breeds. We are in metairie. And we would like eggs and meat. I was figuring to go to the feed store for whatever else I need, not the actual chicks.
