"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Twiley, for now I don't think I'm going to even mess with the Golden Cuckoo Marans. This has been a learning experience with the whole eBay eggs situation. I have only one that came out to be a true Golden Cuckoo Marans and it's a roo. I'm still hoping maybe one of the others might turn but their legs are still dark and that is unacceptable. Looks like most of them will turn out to look like cuckoo marans. I don't know. I think I'm going to concentrate on the Speckled Sussex and try to breed the absoloute best birds that I can breed!! Maybe I'll give the GCM another try later on!!

I'm sorry to hear about the Golden Cuckoo. I love that breed!

I'll be very interested to see your Speckled Sussex.

My Coronations are laying pretty steady although I haven't hatched very many chicks yet. I have lots of eggs in my new cabinet incubator so hopefully I'll be overrun with chicks soon.

The Silver Sussex I bought are almost all roosters. I'm praying that out of the 11 there are at least 2 hens so that I can get a trio. It's not looking good!

I'm thinking that I will probably get some more chicks or eggs.

I don't know what I have yet on the Buff Sussex. Those are some cute little chicks! Again, I'm thinking that I may buy some more chicks and/or eggs to have a good selection to choose from for my breeding stock.

That looks delicious. You did a great job. So do you think that you will raise them again for meat? Was it worth it? I can't wait to get some as well. I called our local TSC and they will not be getting any more chickens this year. I will have to check a few hatcheries to see if they have any meat birds.

That really sucks on having all roo's!! It's almost how it always turns out! How are you liking your cabinet bator?? Hope your hatch turns out well.

Well, I have 3 GCM hens. I had a roo too but culled him Saturday. He was the "special" one. All of these came from Pasofino farms in Texas. My buddy bought and hatched these out. I had one female and he had the 2 others. Well one was way to loud he said so I ended up getting that one. Then his neighbor called the SO about the noise and I got the last one. The only problem with them though is their egg color. They don't even come close to even the lighest egg on the marans egg color chart, but their beautiful birds! Maybe I can breed this new roo to them, raise some and see what kind of egg color I can get. Anyway it'll be awhile for even that since this little roo is only 4 weeks old!!

As far as the SS go, I bought the Standard of Perfection book so I know what to look for when the time comes to try to pick the best of the best out of them. I have 18 and believe I have at least 6 to 8 roo's. What is your opinon on the amount of roo's?? How many would you keep?? I'm torn on that. I have 3 different set from 3 different breeders. 5/8/5

Oh definetly. It was truly easy raising them. Other than the fact that they are VERY smelly birds cause they poop so much and I had to replace their water several times a day. I will definetly get a really big waterer for next time. And I will also move the tractor everyday instead of every few days!! I will tell you this. I would not try to raise them as hot as it is right now. I got these in March and I think next time I will try to get them even a bit earlier even if I have to put a light on them more. Or even try getting them in October once it's cooled off!! Next time when I do it them I'll get between 15 - 20 and go big all at one time. I'll need to get another freezer that's for sure!! Give it a try.

Great info. I forgot about the heat. I guess I won't try to raise any this year. I'll wait until next year as well. They are on my list for next year.

Thanks for all of the info and updates.

So far, I'm loving my cabinet incubator. I won't know how the hatches are going for some time yet because I had lots of eggs that were kinda old that I put in the incubator. As I transition to fresh eggs I'll have a better feel for how my hatches are going. I love the electronic digital display on the outside.

I want to buy the Standard of Perfection book too. Do you have an ISBN for the book? I am transitioning to Exhibition/Show Quality stock and plan to breed everything to the standards.

On the roosters, I'd definitely keep two in case something happened. If you have the space, it wouldn't be a bad idea to grown out three and see which two you like the best.

That sounds like a plan! Here is the link where I bought it from!! http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/APA_ShoppingMall3.htm

Just finished up a hatching of chicks this past weekend. Set 45 eggs and 44 hatched. I had put
in a few of my Rose Comb RIR to see if they were fertile (these are sill pullet eggs) and I hatched
1. Went out to the coop late Monday evening and my Rc RIR roo was dead. He had internal problems
and was having problems pooping.
Waiting on 2 Royal Palm eggs to hatch this weekend and have 72 guinea eggs to hatch off on the 28th of May.
Then I have a guy bringing me Bourbon Red eggs Saturday and I just won some chocolate turkey eggs off
of ebay.
Hope everyone that has a chance of getting flooded makes it through okay.

That chicken looks amazing!!!! make sure you save the scraps and carcass fir stock. You can even freeze it and wait til you have a few and make a huge pot to freeze or can. Really get your money worth out of those birds!
