"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Neat! Thanks, y'all.
I'm having fun learning new ways to feed the flock. I read about people throwing fish scraps to the birds too, but I'm hesitant to try it.

We do - we rake up fresh grass clippings & all the weeds I pull from my rose bed. I also ask at the grocery store produce dept - they pull a lot of green stuff off the shelf & will give it away.

I always heard fish will give the eggs an off taste, so I never tried it.

Julie what happened with the duck wranglers?

We had a restless night here, Jim kept having leg spasms. I guess so, he is lifting his own weight plus that plaster cast all day long! I'll up his intake of bananas, orange juice & sweet potatoes & see if that helps.

People who go off on retreats to strengthen their relationships can do better by just staying at home & putting one of them in a cast on crutches. Talk about therapeutic!

Have a good Sunday everybody!

Edit to add: if fish would make eggs taste fishy, I wonder if you could feed them say, Tony Chachere's & make the eggs taste Creole?

from my layers it just coinsides/completes one another, it's what you'd call a side effect, I'd reckon.

Terri, hope things get better with Jim. I know all about those retreats. Went through that with my hubby in 08 when he had major back surgery.

We worked in one of the sheds last night and got it half done. Gonna try to get it finished today.

Gotta go eat. Hubby cooked brunch!

Pete, when I have time I attach the bag to our lawnmower and give each of my coops a bag of fresh cut grass. They go crazy over the grass!! It saves on feed on those days when I can give them grass. It's a real treat for them.

Ive been crushing acorns for my chickens. They love them. If you have oaks, they are a great supplement for feed right now.

Got another question ............

As I mentioned yesterday my Rock Barred hen is just sitting and not laying . She is on her nest constantly . This afternoon my wife and I went out to tend
to the critters and sure enough she was still sitting . One quick note : earlier I was out and heard her doing the hen clucking , like hey everyone I am about
to lay one . Anyway my wife picked her up from the nest box and set in her on the ground but she squatted , my wife picked her up again and set her down
again and she squatted again . A few minutes later while we were observing her ; she got up and went straight back to her nest . Is she sick , someone said
she is probably broody , but her behavior today is something I have never seen . Is this typical for a hen that is broody to squat ? I am concerned she may
be egg bound , because of the way she acted today , I am asking because you all are the experts and I have little experience with chicken behavior .

Thanks ,
Stephen

mmmmmm............. that is strange. The best advise I could give you is to do a search on here for egg bound. I have 0 experience with that!! Good luck!

Thanks , will do .

I was told I should go in here as I wasn't getting many replies.
Well, I have a couple hens, who aren't the brightest bulbs, and was thinking about getting a rooster to protect them. I don't need anything fancy, most of my hens are mixed, but I do want a standard sized roo.
I live in Sulphur, LA.

I haven't had much experience with broodies, but the one I did have, growled every time I went near her nest. Is your hen growling? I don't remember if the one I had squatted or not, sorry. Julie will know -- she is the queen of broodies!
is her comb bright red or pale (pale would be indicative of bad health). Is her vent swollen? Is she pooping normally?
