Made bread tonight - a big deal for me

I know that my venture into egg raising was and is internet based although I have read and reread all of the Little House books as well as the Carla Emery's book - The Encyclopedia of Country Living. From these sources and now the internet, I feel confident to start and try many things that were simple life skills for my great grandmoms - Lester May, Gram and Zoe. Lester May lived on the prairie in at least one soddie, Gram was a city gal back in the day with a dozen children and Zoe was a child of a plantation owner, but they each knew more than I will ever know despite my education level. Imagine a 50 year old afraid to make bread or pie crust!!! LOL

I think I may have gained a few pounds just thinking about your fresh baked bread (with lots of butter, of course).......baked goods are my HUGE weakness!!!

Congrats!!!

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

I kind of cheat... I have a Kitchenaid mixer that has the dough-hook... it kneads the bread for me. But I make it all from scratch, and make peasant loaves or regular loaves out of it.

My hands can't handle all the kneading, either. But at least I know what goes in it.
I have a really yummy (and easy) french bread recipe that I doctor up with italian herbs and chopped olives... very good fresh with butter.

drool.

The kneading was definately one of my sticking points, but Suzanne made it seem so simple! The mixer is definetly an option, but I have not seen mine since my move to this house! It may be in a cabinet somewhere, but I have not seen it in 18 years. DH claims he has no idea what I am talking about....

Thanks!

We have two English Cockers, they were most attentive during the mixing, rising, punching, rising again portion of the day. Baking and cooling were of interest too. During the cooling portion, one EC laid on the floor in the kitchen pointed toward the bread - BTW she NEVER sleeps in there.

I cut the bread and gave slices to the humans in the house and split a slice between the two EC's.

Later I entered the kitchen and saw the two loaves. One had been reduced by 3/4 by humans weilding a serrated knife - the other with a large corner missing - rodent in the kitchen???? I think not, EC on hind legs...absolultly!

Now both loaves are in large brown paper bags...welll away from ANY edges.

Luckily the Delightful Dozen are sleeping in their coop or I would have to share with them too!

every time..and I do mean EVERY time I try to make bread its just a flop...I may try your web-site where you got the recipe...homemede bread is as close to heaven as it gets...yummm:D
