Made my decision

Ok... for the run, which gets muddy and is starting to smell, we will put in a layer of sand about 3 inches deep then throw a little straw, grass clippings, weeds pulled from the garden, twigs. I also cur some small branches from the trees and this will all layer on top of the sand. We do not have that much natural material so thought sand would be a good base as we build on it with organics. Our coop is working out nicely with pine shavings and straw because we have removeable trays that are lined with floor tile for easy clean. I have a 10 gallon bag filled with lawn fixings drying out so when we get sand down next weekend, I will put the dried natural stuff on it.

It obviously won’t be “deep litter” for a couple of seasons. For now let’s just call very very very sparse litter.

You can add a bag or two of the shavings sold for livestock bedding; I prefer the finer stuff. Mary

I do have some pine shavings that I use in the coop. I was going to put sand, then straw and pine shavings mix then begin the yard/mower leavings with whatever else I can scavenge from the woods.
