Magpie Ducks

We have two magpies, Maggie and Phantom. We think Phantom is a male because of his coloring and voice. Maggie is the photo I used for my profile. We also have one runner duck who is very sweet. Maggie seems to be the smartest of the three. When I bring them slugs from my community garden, she is always the first to find them, and she gobbles them up before the other two have a chance to see them. She is so sweet!

i have a one yr old magpie that i just bought and she layed eggs for the first 3 days now she has not layed one in 3-4 days can anyone tell me as to why she is doing that? she is in with 2 pekins one male and one female. but she layed for the first 3days

I notice my Magpie hen does the same thing, she's three. She'll take a break, sometimes up to five days, and then resume laying. They're not as good of egg layers as my Welsh Harlequins, but I enjoy thier calmer personality.
If you just got her I wonder if the stress of changing homes caused the interruption. Maybe she laid the eggs she had in the "pipeline" and will wait a little bit before she starts to make more.

Hey all! I am new to raising ducks and I have three magpies ducklings. This is the first time I've seen a thread about them. I didn't realize they are so rare. They are the sweetest little things and my family has fallen in love with them! Any tips and thinks would be greatly appreciated : )

We've decided to add a duck layer/meat component to our pastured based farm operation. After much research we settled on Magpie as a good dual purpose breed. I like the idea of a ~5 lb bird with high quality meat but also an excellent egg layer. The perk is their beautiful plumage and seemingly mellow personalities. We found few breeders in the PNW (actually none) and wanted to help maintain this fantastic breed. While breeding show quality birds is not the primary purpose of our operation we are going to do our best to produce birds with the typical magpie pattern. The key from reading seems to selecting dark drakes as sires so I'll be sure to hold on to those when we cull the males from the flock each year. I'm looking forward to the experience and appreciate all the exuberant press that magpies have been given on BYC.

Here are a few pics of our new arrivals.

Wow! Check out those feet.

All 31 of them!

I would like to see a few pictures of the mandarin ducks. I hear they're very beautiful. And the blue magpies are always my favorite :)
