Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

So much to catch up on this thread!

So far I have 14 Silver Sussex eggs and 2 Silver Grey Dorking eggs to go in. Some of the SS are getting rather old but I promised not to start the 'bator up again till the Easter hatch so I'm putting them in anyway. I'm getting an egg a day from the Sussex girl and hoping the Dorkings will get organized and lay me some more before we set.

So exited about this hatch and so glad at least some of my girls started laying in time.

Okay...weird question.

Does anyone know who on BYC might speak Spanish fluently?

I'm working on a project that needs someone who speaks VERY WELL and knows how to use chicken terminology in Spanish. I need help with emails and a few phone calls.

There will be pay...a little bit.

Some of the dialect will be South American, if that makes a difference.

Pass word on? I really need help with this.

wow It took me a long time to read all the posts I had just to catch up. I just wanted to let everyone know I set 6 chines white geese eggs. a bit back so that they will hatch for Easter. I was going to set 6 turkey eggs but they arrived early so they might hatch a week earlier. But ya so I have 6 eggs set for the contests and just need to come up with 14 to make 20 lol. I think I can come up with 14 of my own eggs maybe... Though I will need a lot of luck on this hatch. I just tryed to hatch some and only one chick hatched.

now I have a lone chick that is hanging out with me.

Well according to my husband who is from mexico and was raised on a farm, they don't really go by a breed type as long as they can lay eggs.

Pollitos = Baby chick, Pollo = Chicken, Gallo = rooster , Egg = Huevo

I have tried to sell his friends BLUE and GREEN Chicken eggs for eating lol and they refuse them and asked him if I paint them.
Not many have seen different color eggs other than Brown or White eggs.

You don't have to worry about translating dollar amounts they know their money very well.

Ok, I've got big shoes to fill (thanks Kathy)... but I'm going to do my absolute best to keep track of the contests and prizes. If I'm missing anything or you'd like to clarify your prize/contest/etc please let me know.

Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC Easter Hatch Contests:

1. Best Hatch Rate Contest:

For this contest during this hatch, participants will be hatching a minimum of 20 eggs. Post how many you will have cooking by Monday 04 April 2011 and then don't go back and edit your post where you tell us how many eggs you start with. When the hatch is over, you'll take a pic and post it to show us how many you actually got... it would be nice if we could count them.
In the event of a tie, the one who hatches the most chicks wins.

2. Cutest Chick Picture:
Pic will need to be taken and posted by or before 11:59PM on April 26th... We'll be asking folks in the hatch as well as some moderators to help me judge if they are willing. There will be 1st and 2nd place awards given

3. Guess for # of chicks Mahonri hatches:
Guesses need to be made before 11:59:59PM on April 6th. The guesses will be posted on post 1 somewhere beside the hatch participant's name.
In order to help break a tie, you'll also need to guess the breeds of the first three chicks out. If you want to know what breeds are in Mahonri's bator read the thread!

4. Best Overall Hatch Participant:
This will be determined by vote of participants in a PM to Mahonri. Votes will start on April 25th and end on April 27th.

This photo must be a REAL rooster, no photoshopping, no images taken from commercial and/or professional sites, can belong to the entrant OR a friend, family member or other live person who gives you permission to use the photo. We want BYC roosters, y'hear? If you don't have a rooster, ask a friend or neighbor WITH a rooster if you can take pictures ... Or if they have a bona-fide rooster crowing photo to lend you. Roosters may be living or memorialized.

3. Gryeyes has offered up 2 more solar yard art: Chicken with Chicks.
4. Dsqard has offered a plush chicken as a prize

I'm agreeing with CRYSTALCREEK in that pictures of chickens on the head might cause some issues... including limiting some participation due to posting faces (minors, etc).

I was the one that suggested best broody picture. That could involve a lot of people because it could include mean broodies, cute broodies, multiple broodies or broody with chicks?

Here's what got me thinking about it... my broody banty who puffs herself up and extends her wings to make her look bigger. If only you could also hear the sound clip associated with it...:

She convinced me a week ago (how could I not be convinced... she's scary) to give her 4 eggs.

Well if everyone is concerned about putting their children's faces on the web (I don't blame you, kinda scary out there sometimes) I could do the broody hen pics, or do the chicken on the head pics but only allow entries with adults in the pics.
Good morning Mahonri!

I think the broody hen "any poultry" is a good picture contest! It doesn't have to be with chicks just the broody.

Oh and by the way it is time for the daily count down!!!!

We have 3 days until the big day of setting hundreds (maybe thousands??) of chicken eggs!
disclaimer: I am in no way leaving out the ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, and others I just can't keep track.
