I know exactly where you are talking about... I grew up in a small town called Union Beach... Exit 117 surrounded by Keyport, Keansburg and Hazlet...

I'm sorry I just can't picture this... you must submit a photo.

(Congrats on having wicked cool kids!)

Honestly, I'd be happy to show a pic, but we lost everything in a house fire in '99...so there aren't any in my possession. My parents never took any (gee, wonder why!?) and back then digital photography was still sci-fi, so until someone posts something on the web, I'm safe from that particular form of reminiscing...

I saved a very scorched yearbook, but the pages are stuck together from the water from the firefighters...I hope someday the Alumni Assoc makes this stuff available online. There's a good pic of me in one with Patty Graves, a classmate who went on to write and direct the Academy Award-winning movie 'Monster'...her mohawk was bigger than mine in the pic...

Yes! I've been to Sandy Hook. (You know, I actually have a T-shirt that says "Jersey Girl." I wear it when I'm doing yard work or building something.

ChooksChick, I am so sorry about your house fire. I would have loved to see the mohawk, too. Maybe you can recreate it for us.

Sorry to hear about the fire.. I can relate... I had 3 photo albums with a bunch of pics of family and friends growing up... Back in 2003, my husband and I were in hard times and had almost everything we owned in storage.. we had just moved to another place after being evicted and because we hadn't changed over the address, we didn't get the past due notice and they auctioned everything off... There was almost nothing of "value" in there but most of it was irreplaceable... EVERYTHING from my childhood was in there...

LOL... I would NEVER wear anything that told people where I am from... I hated NJ when I was a kid... I can remember in Kindergarden asking my parents if we could move away... I have a southern accent now and when someone asks me if I am from NC I tell them, "Don't hold it against me but I am from NJ... Unfortunately I could not choose where my parents had me but I got out first chance I could!".. I move to NC 17 years ago this month!!

Granted, leaving NJ at 19 almost killed me (literally) but, I don't regret leaving and I've never looked back... The ONLY thing I miss is looking out across the bay and seeing NYC.. I used to be able to see the twin towers from my back porch.... And the fireworks were absolutely beautiful!!! I never payed attention to the ones right above my head.. Always looked across the water!! LOL

Thanks, all- it was hard at the time, but we had the baby pics and wedding pics in a fire safe, and everyone furry survived, so it was just a moment in life to take stock of what's important- and that has nothing to do with 'stuff.'

Occasionally there's a moment of sadness for the lost Christmas ornaments from Germany from several generations back, things like that...but for the most part, it's not that big a deal. It was sort of a paradigm reset and kept us in that mindset of eyes-on-the-prize...not on the Joneses...

And taking all of your stuff down to almost nothing? There's a certain Zen in that. Going to a hotel room without shoes, pajamas, toothbrushes? But all together with the cats and dogs, all safe and uninjured? Precious.

I'm an optimist. I don't dwell on the half empty part. I see potential for a full glass!

Do you mind if I post it on Facebook? Giving you ALL the credit of course.

Feel free to post on Facebook. I'm not needing too much credit, maybe just say it came from the Backyard Chicken forum.

Glad to give you a chuckle.
