Steve et al: You might (or might not) remember that I had set some eggs and had a huge temperature spike. I woke up at my usual 6 a.m., stumbled out to check the temperature and humidity and gasped. The thermometer goes to 120 and it was all the way up. I am sure that the internal temperature of the eggs was at least 110. I saw it, flipped the lid off and tried to cool them down but realized there was no way they were going to survive that. Then I remembered Steve had a thread going at the time called "will they hatch?". I decided to wait it out and see.
Basically almost all of the eggs were ruined. I had 46 eggs in there, and after waiting a week I checked for developement. 11 eggs appeared to be developing. So I threw out all of the eggs but the 11. Of those 11 I had 100% hatch. Yahoo right? I will tell you the bad news. Apparently eyes begin developing on day three of development because I have more than one chick with either no eyes whatsoever, or eyes that do not open, or one eye that is malformed. So yes, I am culling. I have decided to focus on the positive and I actually have some chicks that are either perfect or have a slightly wonky eyelid.
I chose not to take pictures. It is just sad and somehow seemed disrespectful to photograph them like that. In retrospect I am still glad I gave those eggs every chance possible. Has anyone else had anything like this happen?
