Apparently, I have developed some sort of hatcher's OCD. Not being able to leave them alone, I candled them again when turning them this afternoon. All 6 have large dark areas in them with veins!! Two of them have obvious hearts/eyes (or whatever that big spot is) visible. I'm so eggcited!!! Had to share with you all because my husband wouldn't get it. I know they won't all hatch. I was, quite frankly, not expecting much from this little experiment. I'm more than surprised that all 6 have made it this far!

Don't underestimate yourself,I for one believe all six will hatch....

that would cause more than a little problem, so, with my luck, is likely to happen! I had a really great, large brooder that I sent out to the trash. I'm only going to need to keep these kids for a month, but with 6 of them, its going to be a very long month!!!

I had never thought of a feather duster. I made a false mommy too. I made a basic pillowcase for the heating pad. And then to its surface I sewed strips of floppy flannel that hang down. I put the heating pad on low and the pillowcase has straps that I thread through holes I cut in the side of the cardboard brooder box so it is suspended above the chicks. They nestle into it like it were a mommy.

Oh Rathbone, your invented 'mommy' sounds so wonderful. The heating pad makes it especially snuggly.
We all love our peeps!!!
I have friends that roll their eyes when I tell them about my chicks/chickens and what I do to make them comfortable/happy. Obviously these are NOT chicken friends. That's why I love my BYC friends so much..........they understand.
Happy Holidays to all my BYC friends and to all chicken lovers everywhere.
My next hatch date will be Jan 4th.......12 golden cuckoos (shipped) and 2 welsummer x (from my coop).
Best of luck to all of us hatchaholics. : )

Wow Kathy, I just went to the page with all of the photos for week one and they are all wonderful. The white peacock is gorgeous.

That little blue chick of mine is now blue pullet. For some reason in the w/bw coop it is last on the pecking order. Today DS #3 found it hiding under the ramp that goes up to the pop door and the chickens had pecked through to the BONE on it's back.

We brought it in, washed it up, put on Neosporin ointment and covered it. Then off to isolation so she can heal. Poor thing, I think I'll put her in the polish coop once she is healed.

I am not about to let my chicks see these posts ....

they are just gonna have to be satisfied with my ghetto mama "warshrag!"

*snickering, hmmm, well at least I warmed it up in the microwave....*

I put a stuffed animal in the brooder once... most of the chicks ignored it but a couple snuggled up under it.
Through it away after. it stunk.
