Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

One kid down, another to go.

ETA: I still need to go put the stoopid chicks who sleep in the open into the coop.

Wish my 3 would fall asleep- "they're watching Horton Hears a Who" and I need to stay awake longer than they do or they might be kind of up set tomorrow am

DH is out plowing snow so it's up to me...

Have a good one!

Wow it's cold out. Even with ear muffs, a face mask and down jacket on.

The broody is a week behind this hatch. She was a surprise that I just continued to let brood instead of dealing with it. I wasn't really planning on having a broody hatch anything until spring but it was really cute. I figured she wouldn't hatch anything, anyway. Too cold and a first time broody.

Anyway, there's 4 eggs under her (2 white from the leghorns, an EE and an unknown brown egg which is not hers - again all turken daddy). 3 of the eggs look like the yolk has settled into the bottom of the egg the way it was laying if that makes sense. I definitely saw some veining like I was supposed to on one of the eggs. I'm not ruling any of them out, though. I stink at this candling thing.

Too bad you're not closer... I should have tons of free chicks! Hopefully I'm still in the running for best hatch rate... so I can get a GFM to get more picture storage space!

Thanks, giving chickens is a lot like giving gifts - its the thought that counts! I am NOT allowed any more chickens! I had to sell some of my 3-week olds today (I planned to from the time I ordered them).

Hatching eggs is allowed because my parents think its interesting and that it is LESS likely to produce chicks.

I just broke down and bought a GFM, because I wanted the title 'CHICKEN TENDER', mostly. I am out of the hatch rate contest (2 out of 12 remain) but I am still in the running for worst hatch rate and most eggs rotting. As far as the first hatched, my tradition is to see the new year in while looking at the back of my eyelids, and cutest chick... I am incubating E.E. mixes, and a poor photographer. I posted a picture sideways and another member had to turn it for me and repost it!

The GFM extra storage comes in handy, I love showing off pictures of my chickens.

And to think I used to laugh at my secretary for carrying around pictures of her cat!

I LOVE the extra pic storage and the extra PM space. It's the reason I have it. I am not allowed to change my title.

The Brass let us non-uniformed folks go home early today, at 1400 hrs! I got some prime chicken time!!

REALLY GOOD THING I GOT HOME when I did!!! My only Buckeye chick (about 10 wks old so I still don't know if it's a pullet or cockerel) had somehow managed to get a foot caught in some of the trailing bird netting along one side of the run, and was stuck there with that foot up in the air. Auuggghhh! I had to BITE the last thread of netting to get it loose. Kinda limpy now, but doing okay. Whew!

And I also discovered a bullied pullet: one of the Salmon Faverolles. Due to the shortened daylight hours, I've only been able to do a half-backsideed head count in the dark every night. Poor little thing (about 10 weeks old) had been pecked BALD, and was huddled under anything she could find. Miserable looking. I brought her into the house and put her in her own "recovery" Rubbermaid bin with water & Pedialyte mixed and some chick starter. Still have 3 very young bantam chicks in a brooder in there, plus the 4 call ducklings in their own brooder. The SF now has a name, Esmerelda, and she was pretty shocky. But she finally drank some, then rested, then drank some more, then started to chow down. Poor thing, thirsty and starved! She'll be in the bathroom/nursery/hospital for a while.

On the plus side: guess what, some of the chickens have missed ME, too! Betsy BR actually got into my lap after I skritched her on the back of her neck, near her tail and in the middle of her back. Then she fell asleep. She has NEVER fallen asleep there before. Luckily chickens take short naps; I still had more chores to do. And boy howdy, did I have a lot of eggs to gather I hadn't seen at night in the beam of light from the bill of that silly baseball cap I bought to gather eggs this time of year. Molly Australorp muttered and mumbled in a diatribe about something or other, following me around. The rescue hen, Red GLW, ALMOST took treats from my hand. She is looking so much better! Comb and wattles all reddened up, scales on legs and feet now laying flat.

I was able to lug the three 50# bags o' feed back to the shed and into their garbage can storage. All the chicks in the ginormous brooder are doing well; I started with 33 and am down to 30. The first week in that brooder out in the shed, I lost two to piling - added a second heat lamp a little bit away from the first one after that - and the third casualty appeared to be "failure to thrive."

Most of those chicks - definitely the LF breeds - will be going outside to grow-out quarters by the time the NYD hatch is ginormous brooder-ready.

I am SO glad the days are getting longer. Finally.

Wow! Just wow!

Hats off to you. I respect the care you lavish on your flock.

I just got back in from an incubator check, still no pips; and a brooder check, 3-week olds sleeping soundly - no light and 70 degrees. I am nervous about the 70 degrees, but I cannot keep running a heat lamp. There are 18 of them to huddle and they are sleeping happily, so I guess 70 degrees is ok.

Linda during our recent wing clipping event, we found our roo could hardly walk because he had thread all tangled up in his feet. THREAD??? Where in the Lord's good name did THAT come from. Took me 10 minutes to unwind it. Poor guy.

Christmas with the family and In-Laws is DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing like cramming visits to both sides of the family into one day. Over, finished, done, and completed.

Mind you, I love both sides very dearly.. Hubby and I got lucky on that one.. But this will be the first Christmas day that we have had since being together, that we have nowhere to be. So, I am looking forward to an all out PJ wearing, couch hugging, cell phones off, hot chocolate drinking, nowhere to go, lazy Christmas day with my hubby..
