Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I have a dumb newbie question......

I have several chicks that keep pecking at the other chicks' eyes!! Is this normal behavior or not? I'm worried I'm going to end up with a chick with a damaged eye or two.

Within 24 hours they are determining pecking order... amazing isn't it... I have one that they were really picking on and so we had to separate a few into a different compartment in the brooder. It had splaid legs and toes that curled so we have made shoes for it and tied its legs together. I think it's going to make it.

Looks like there were a couple who say they've got 100% hatches... #set = #hatched.

As stated in post #1, the winner will be the one who hatched the most chicks.

I took another 15 out when I did away with the egg cartons, so I went from 57 at lockdown to 42 still going.

I 've had internal pips on 2. One stopped rocking and peeping, so kind of worried I have drowning cchicks, BCMs too.

Yawn! Good morning! I was a little worried about my 'pulled out of the egg' rescue chick last night, but s/he is doing great this morning. Just like a normal chick. I was POSITIVE that one was dead in shell - all the other chickies were done and that one had just a pip and no movement. Chickie seems great!

I have two inbubators. Everybody from one was done yesterday and in the brinsea, I'm still waiting for the last two to pip! I know now that my brinsea was running on the low side, I think I'll have to set it for 100 or higher to get it up to 99.5 on egg level.

And yes, I would imagine that the remainder in your bator don't stand much of a chance.

When I candled at day 18 I noticed how much further behind the once hatching now were.
I had a goodly number that were fully developed and never pipped the membrane. Wierd.

I'm trying to sort out which chicks are which today.. only ones I know for sure are the four BLRW. I know I have one BCM in there - that one should not have feathered legs and should be a mostly black/mottled chick, right?

I assume my feather leg chicks are the frizzled cochin or the mutt eggs.. I have one cream colored chick/clean legs that is ?? and the rest are probably EE/mutt eggs. Tried to get a few pics but they come out better in natural light..

Always such fun trying to decipher shipped eggs.

I THINK this is a frizzle cochin..although could be mutt egg as well.

one of the last two ICELANDICS have pipped and I have faith for the last one!!! Day 23 may be started before it hatches.

So, Lucky (bw ameraucana) finally hatched after almost 18 hours pipped, one is still zipping (icelandic) ...thought it would be out by now, one has a good sized pip and still waiting for the final one to pip. If it's not pipped by 8AM, I think I'll pip it.
