Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Ok, I read an article that says the older an egg is, the longer it takes to start incubation. So if you put a new egg in with a week egg at the same time, there will be a lag in hatching time. The older the egg, the longer the hatching time. However this is under refrigerated conditions. The article even told you how much earlier to set the older eggs depending on how much older to get them to hatch at the same time. If kept over at room temp, the lag time will be reversed and the older egg can hatch ahead of the new egg. Not that this is necessarily what's going on with yours, but something to keep in mind.

I had to move some chicks out of the bator because...........see the bottom left.

One check hatched and it looks like this. I'm not sure if it will make it, it was very wet and not closed all the way to say it nicely.

I'm hoping it dries up and falls off. I need to leave to go to the barn and work today. I guess I will see what happens when I get back.

You will be surprised! I've had chicks hatch like this and they do fine, just give it some time to finish. Sometimes they get in such a hurry to get out before they are finished cooking.

Been paying so much attention to the first egg that pipped and the chick that is hatched that I didn't even notice one of the other eggs is halfway zipped.

Probably the one I have been hearing peeping back at the one hatched.

Just taking it's own sweet time. I think the only time I was as frazzled as I was yesterday before I got the first pip was when I was waiting for my mare to foal out. Two weeks of the mare stare and I still missed the birth not to mention a lot of sleep!

I guess we can be the "late to the party" hatchers!

Second chick is working on that zip and I finally saw some movement on the egg that pipped first yesterday! Looks like I should have at least three. Really hoping that I get at least one of the lav orps to hatch but will be happy with just my AM's if that is all I get. Just really happy that I should have at least two since I doubt there are any other "fools" hatching chicks in January in Utah!
