Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

You wouldn't really know until you saw her bottom half. If she had a big yolk sac still attached then you would know it wasn't absorbed. Is the inner membrane the one that it wrapped around her wet? The outer one is usually paperlike and white after they pip. It is the inner one that gets them into trouble if it dries out and doesn't let them move...."shrink wrapped" . You can slowly pick away at the upper most part of the shell like others have said and you can look in and see what it looks like.

Now I see that there are 2 membranes... next to each other. Yes, it was white and stuck to her. Now its wet and stuck to her. Should I try to work it off?

Yes as long as it's not terribly bloody. If it's white, you're all set. If not, cover her in a damp towel and stick her back in the incubator to bake another few hours (leave beak exposed).

When working it off, there will be some blood but stop if you see a lot or a lot of veins. Once you get her unstuck the membrane will also still be attached to her umbilical. Leave it and stick her back in the incubator with it attached. She'll work it off in about 30 min.

If it helps at all, here's a picture of mine after I broke her beak out. The inner membrane was clinging to her, but I could tell when she slid out into my hand finally that it wasn't really "sticking" to her in the way I've heard shrinkwrapped described. The only thing I really had to do was get her out without causing too much bleeding. There was no need to really pick the membrane off her.

After I got her out and her umbilical was still attached.

She worked her way out of the shell but laid in this position most of the night until we got up and she ran around a bit, detaching the umbilical.

My bad! It was superchemicalgirl. So I will repeat - I loved it. And I loved the tone. It showed reverence for life, joy in the hatch, cameraderie between us, solace for those who didn't fare so well - really nailed the spirit of the hatch. Plus it was informative for the uninitiated and yet didn't talk down. The photos really showed the spectrum of feelings during the hatch. Excellent work!

I swear this is the longest hatch ever. I came home to yet another hatched splash marans. There are two left. At this rate the turkeys who were due yesterday won't hatch until thursday or friday. I can't wait to get my spot check in the mail to see what my bator is running at.

I couldn't stand it anymore since I haven't heard a peep in the last few hours. So, I candled very quickly and it is still moving.. Though it hasn't pipped at all. At this rate, I may have the first baby out of the shell for the Easter hatch...

And when it does finally hatch, it should already be crowing or laying eggs..
