Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

I may switch to paper towels for the first two weeks [ I think that's what I'm seeing in your baby brooders ] . Seems like they are intent to scratch as much shavings into the feeder and waterer as possible , and bill out as much feed as possible into the shavings . I've tried sand , but it clumps bad and they scratch it into the feed and water just as bad as shavings , or worse .

Congrats on the hatch ! You must surely reign as the BYC Queen of Hatch !

Just a few minutes into Christmas here , so

Yes, I do use paper towels, for the first week or however long I keep them in the tubs. It's a hassle changing them everyday, but is alot easier than cleaning the shaving out of the waterers and feeders. When I put them in the outside brooder I use shavings, and I put the feed and water up on a brick. That helps quite a bit.

Merry Christmas, Steve, Mahonri, and to all of you!

Kathy, Adorable, healthy chicks. I have a big "moving box" from U-haul that I brood mine in for the first couple of weeks.
then a dog crate where the light sits on the top outside.

This week I'll be duct taping the corners of it and getting it ready with paper towels etc...

Santa's work is done

Aren't they a bunch of fun? DH bought ours a few weeks ago as an early Christmas present. We had to shovel out our driveway that had over two feet of snow in some places on a Monday morning so we could get to work. DH was planning on getting me one for Christmas anyway to help me with my stable chores. It was going to be a surprise but he decided that he is too old to be shoveling snow (have to agree with him there in the sense that I think I am too old to be shoveling snow

) so by Tuesday evening we had the Ranger with the plow on the front. I didn't let him drive it for weeks. I was having too much fun plowing, hauling manure and dumping it on the back side of the property. No more wheelbarrow through mucky mud! Have I mentioned lately how lucky I am to have such an awesome husband? He puts up with my crazyness and I put up with his. That is probably why we get along so well.

He teases me constantly about the chicken mania but he is getting sucked into it as well. He is almost excited about the chicks hatching next weekend as I am.

Merry Christmas to everyone in the BYC family!

Steve that is about the funniest thing I have seen in a long time! Just about choked on my coffee!

God Bless Governor Palin... and a nice mounting job I might add!

merry christmas... the little darling had us up since 5:30AM

I don't even want to think about the Visa bill Santa just unloaded on me.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

Santa has done his job around here, now there is paper and packing materials slung all over the living room which means Christmas time for the dogs has begun. I keep catching them running off with small parts, toys and cardboard.

You know you have a chicken problem when you are eyeballing all the empty boxes and picking the ones you could use as a "brooder".
