Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

If your worried about egg eating try fake eggs. Porcelain, plastic etc. Personally, I always used golf balls... chickens aren't that smart apparently.

My broodies always used to start on golf balls.

EDIT: Because I should have proof read that sentence better lol

OH Kathy I been thinking of coop raising too! I think it's a great idea.

I guess these last of Dec bday kids are extra energetic, due to the planets this month. My grand daughter will be 5 NYE and her sister 9 on the 30th. This one has her Natures??? whatever penguin on a little crib matress with her sleeeping bag and watching a penguin dvd, while she kicks her feet as hard as she can up and down to hear the noise. I can't get her to take her antibiotics because "it's just nasty!" She looks at me and tills her head and says "I'm just a little kid. You tryin to kill me with that stuff?" This is the 3rd year in a row with her in the hospital. This year and last was on Christmas night and year before that, day after Christmas. Like Decemeber isn't expensive enough. She's hoping some eggs are going to hatch early for her BDay.

Well I got up this morning and no pips. Got home an hour ago and started reading this thread. WOW...........anyway I have an egg peeping and rocking. Hope that doesn't mean I'll have Jan 3rd or 4th chicks. These were due Christmas. They're SGs. I've never gotten a shipped Silkie egg to hatch. They've pipped and died, but this egg is rocking pretty good, so

I've candled, but so many of these eggs are too dark or I'm too blind.

One of the bators was at 106, so I'm afraid to candle again. Both dropped under 20% humidity, but I don't think it was long enough to do damage. A few hours, but no more than 6 if that.

On a bad bad note. Something got into my quail pen. I thought it was the most secure thing I had. Killed every one of my birds. Also lot one of the rabbits, but don't know what happened to it. No sign of anything attacking it and the other rabbit is fine and in the same pen. The quail were scratched up. Really weird looking. To me it looks like a cat played with them, but I have no idea how whatever it was got in. Heads were chewed, not eaten. The pen has 1/2 in hardware cloth, secure latches and no gaps. I don't get it. Kind of a bummer of a day.

Oh I WISH I could get chicks that cheap!
Over here some hatcheries are asking up to $12 EACH for pure breed day olds sexed but here is the kicker... they want $12 EACH for the roos too!

.99c would buy you sexlink roos from a hatchery, if you shopped around.

Hence I would LOVE that 'bator! I can't afford to buy day olds in all the breeds I'd like and if I had that 'bator I'd be opening a pure breed hatchery myself!
