Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Ear infection need antibiotics. Croup can be relieved by turning on your shower full blast on hot and letting the bathroom fill with steam. Sit on the toilet with her, rocking, have some music, for about 30 minutes.

My now as of yesterday, 5 year old grand daughter has spent Christmas Eve or Christmas night in the ER the past 3 Christmas'. This year it was due to a double ear infection. She had been treated for one a few weeks ago, but not it's even worse. The first antibiotic was Amoxicillin. The new perscription (157 BUCKS!!!) just nuts, is Amox-Clav. If this doesn't work it looks like she'll be getting tubes. I hope not.

The meds weren't working fast enpough for Grandma, so I cut an onion in half, grilled in a skillet and wrapped it in a paper towel. Held the onion with the paper towel on her ear for 5 minutes and the pain stopped. For her couch I put cinnamon sticks in water and let it simmer, strained it and since she's older I added honey for a cinnamon tea. I think it's better to use a little sugar for younger one's since it's not supposed to be good for them until age 3. Cough is almost gone. I'm having a hard time getting her to take the meds. I've tried everything and she still spits it out, so these are my backups.

I agree with Debi. My kids both got ear infections constantly and we got their adenoids removed to take away the jumping-off point for their germs- they both snored like mad, too. Neither of them has had an ear infection since, and they're teens now.

Can you ditch milk products until she's done with this? They thicken the mucus and make it harder to drain everything. Also, giving her probiotic supplements may help a lot- we'd open capsules and sprinkle them over a spoonful of applesauce to get our kids to take them, but I think you can get liquid versions now. Many times that will help clear up stuff, plus help her recover from the antibiotics faster.

Of course, you know chicken soup helps, right? Scientifically proven to decrease swelling in mucus membranes and help fight illness and dehydration!!

Thanks! Sorry to go off topic. She has a broader spectrum drug this time, so it could be bothering her. She's allergic to milk and off all dairy products normally. I've been using the probiotics capsules, and the shower/ night air doesn't seem to help. Maybe it's more than just croup. Her cough is a little wetter now at times 4 days into it. I'm starting to wonder about a UTI given the specifity of some of her pain complaints, though how that can be when she's on an antibiotic, I don't know. Nasty germs!

Wish she could have gotten a chick to make her feel better

Ear infections are serious business. I lost a lot of hearing in my right ear as an adult because of one.

I'm not even experienced at hatching chickens , but I remember others in this area talk about needing to spritz the duck and goose eggs daily , and our spring/summer humidity is often pretty high here .

Thanks Steve. These four are adorable. I will have pics tomorrow. My chip is full and I need get Ken to take all his work pics off of it.

Yep, amoxicillin first and clav. now. Haven't tried the onion or cinnamon, though. Thanks!

So did I.

This isn't instead of the meds. This is to cut the cough and the onion actually takes the pain away. The meds clear it all up, but sometimes the pain is still there and the tea is just good anyway.
