Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

We finished this afternoon with a 100% hatch rate. We started with 11 but 2 were clear (Icelandics) and were removed. We went into lockdown with nine and we now have nine chicks. Here they are:

1 Icelandic. Interesting color, black with orange neck. It looks like a wooly mammoth next to the bantams. This little guy came from an egg with multiple cracks and candle wax all over the small end!

Next is 1 Barred Buff Bantam Cochin Split to Barred Black Bantam Cochin. Heretofore known as "Eyeball."

Then the 3 Barred Black Bantam Cochins Split to Barred Buff Bantam Cochins.

Lastly 4 Bantam Mille Fleur Cochins.

All of the eggs except the Icelandic came from Lynne (wwmicasa1). Thanks Lynne for the extras I shared with Kelly and for the careful marking on the eggs. It made it easy!

The Brinseas are cleaned, disinfected and put away! The babies are tucked safely in their brooder now that the photo shoot is over. They have tiny zip tie bands on now but I am going to buy some real ones tomorrow at the feed store. I am really excited to see how these little guys turn out.

I just love all of the Icelandic chicks. I'm going to figure out why I'm having such horrible hatches lately and order more from you later.

Hopefully when you're ready they'll be laying and dating! Congrats on your TJ's egg. Not many people have one of those!

What incubator are you using? I ask because I started having dreadful hatches and finally realized that the temp in my Brinsea was actually several degrees lower than the digital readout said it was! I now have to set it at 101-102 to actually get the temp to 99.5. I hope you get it figured out. I know how distressing it is. Just in case, hold onto your eggs for a couple more days at least!

Nope, I am not entering any photos for the cutest chick. I don't want my other chicks to get their feelings hurt! Besides, I could never chose. I love them all.

Edited to say if there is ever a day-old stink eye contest I may enter this one!

Mary, you are the BEST photographer.... wonderful.

I am soooooo looking forward to the cute chick photos!

I was so excited to get our 8 little babies that we had ordered last February, I had so many photo ideas for them.

BUT, the feed store MARKED all of the tops of their heads with different color paint to tell them apart. When I gasped at the horrible paint marks they said, oh dont worry those will go away when their feathers come in. Sigh, I wanted fuzz ball photos.

Alas, our chicken house is full, we have had one broody hen in 10+ years and even if we got a broody now, our rooster is a tad past the daddy stage. (10 years old I think) Guessing our bator has dry rot too....sigh (we have one of those foam box ones)
