Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

are they under a red light, that helps to keep them from picking on each other to much,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've actually had them under both a red and regular light (trying to get the right temp in the brooder was actually more trouble than the bator! LOL), and it did not seem to change.

Mahonri - You mentioned figuring out the pecking order, which they are doing as well, but the eye pecking behavior seems to me anyway to not be related to that. They just look at another ones eye like they do when they see something new and peck at it!
With that said, I am seeing much less of that happening this morning, so I guess they will survive with eyes intact.

Only ONE of the GCMarans eggs hatched. Wow. Power ever go off at your house?

Do the cartons they are place in have the bottoms cut out?... for air circulation?

Guess I won't be coming for chicks!

Don't worry. I had some pipped for 24 hours before they hatched.

Me too. They pipped and then I never saw another movement or anything out them until 24 hours later and they started zipping. Hatched fine.

Try putting just the red light on them, and choose a corner or end of your brooder for the lamp- it's okay if it's too hot directly under it. This allows them to find their comfort zone by moving around the coop and choosing the area that feels right, where if it's too hot or cold throughout, some birds may suffer more than others and you'll be guaranteed mucky bums.

I usually focus the red light straight down so it's around 110 right under it. They will go and stretch out under it for a couple of minutes (subathing) and roam around nearby the rest of the time, even venturing to the cold end for jaunts. It's best to let them dictate their favorite temperature.

It's not over yet, Mahonri!!

Laree, if you have any plugs open, it might be best to plug them up now, as a bit of a boost in temp make move things along. No more than a degree and a half.

I always try to keep some shiney stuff in there somewhere, coins, marbles, draw polka dots on the wall of the brooder..... give them something else interesting to do. Turkeys are the worlds worst at it. It is really funny to see them running around, trying to catch that "bug" on the wall.

My lone quail that hatched on the 30th. It really really loves it's stuffed monkey. It sleeps standing up leaning on the thing.

Mahonri- the power has been consistant, as have the temps and humidity. I split the eggs pretty evenly between the incubators, incase one failed. Eggs from both incubators are hatching, so....? The egg carton do have the bottoms cut out.

Not a great hatch rate, but I dunno. Like I said, I have hope! Besides I have at least TWO of your chicks. If none of the FCBMs hatch, I will order you some eggs---if I did something wrong, I am DEFINATELY going to replace your eggies.
