Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Mahonri was talking about the hatch rate contest see

Unless someone comes forward with a hatch rate of 100% who hatched more than 5 eggs,
then Sumatra503 wins a 6 mo GFM for the BEST HATCH RATE. He hatched 5 of 5 100%

CONGRATULATIONS!!

For the Easter Hatch we'll have a minimum of 20 or 25 eggs set in order to be eligible.

well I still have 1 chicken egg in the incubator and if it hatches that will be 6/6

I cut a small piece of washcloth, made it damp in warm water and then placed it over the membrane I had exposed while putting it in the incubator, letting the blood stop. All mine made it that I unshrinkwrapped, so far. 3 of them got the washcloth treatment, but I had to go in a few hours later and hatch each chick. When I hatched them I first went into the bathroom and turned the shower on hot water and let it get hot and steamy in there. I then did the deed either in the sink with the water running or in the shower. I took the shell off first in small pieces then the membrane and the chicks slid right out. I had a few with nasty navels, left it attached and put them back in the incubator. They detached it about a half hour later. Hope this helps.

Thank you.... I did have a warm damp cloth wrapped around it as I helped.. My bathroom will not get steamy. So, I have no options on that. I just held it in the cloth, near a heater. And I dribbled a little warm water on the membrane.. I got his head out enough that he can wiggle and breathe. I am going to give it another 45 minutes and help some more before I go to bed. Maybe he will have absorbed more blood and yolk by then.

Um......do you guys think my little fighter is shrinkwrapped? Should I help it out or just let it go????

Fertile eggs are easy to get. It reminds me of my very first incubation. I bought an incubator at a garage sale and wanted to try it out. I went to the farmers market and bought 2 dozen eggs, and threw in a few of mine (new layers). Funny too .... I hatched 27 of 28 eggs! Boy, I was hooked then!

Perhaps it is for the Hatch rate contest, but I still don't understand. If you have 100 or just 1 eggs your hatch rate will still depend upon how well you care for the eggs and how well your incubator is running. Along with the other factors, shipping, the person they came from, all of that.

I bet anything that means to be eligible to win the GFM offered by BYC, not to participate in the hatch experience at that time. For that particular contest.

I agree. I can't afford 20-25 eggs either.

Perhaps we can have our own hatch with smaller numbers for those who can't afford the larger number of eggs.

It just seems like a strange rule to me to limit the number of eggs.

Wait. You have to have a certain number of eggs???
