Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

So they are out on the porch this evening. I couldn't take the smell or dust anymore.. and wife finally complained. I've got their box covered in sheets and thick towels. It was up to 90 degrees in there but I know once the Sun goes down it will plummet. I hope they can keep each other warm.

My NIGHTMARE is that the light goes out and I'm asleep. I have an extra light available so I'm hoping I do my regular thing and wake up every two hours so I can check to see that the light is still on.

Still not over this ear/sinus infection. I've got to go teach a class in Español tonight... hope to be in bed by 8:30 as I have a full day scheduled tomorrow as well as five hours on Saturday. I'm sad the DS#1 will be flying back to school on Saturday. We will miss him.

... and I'm off to class..

BTW: DS#4's birthday is the 25th of October. I guess those cold January night make babies...

I had a heat light go out in the middle of the night the first time I felt comfortable not waking up in the middle of the night to check them (darn you, Murphy). It was April in Maine, and was snowing. It was about 55 degrees in my basement. They all made it til morning (although I did have to hear about it!)

And it's a cold night in January here... and I *don't* want kids...

I give props to everyone that has posted such cute pictures of their chicks... I spent an hour or better this evening trying to get a pic of my 3 that hatched. They would have nothing of it. We did get a good laugh though. The two that hatched first, kept jumping around like those mexican jumping beans I used to get as a kid!!

Lazarus wasn't to difficult to photograph since he is still sort of weak. I also figured out why he had a hard time hatching. His vault was so pronounced that everytime he threw his head back to pip, his beak couldn't reach the shell. Anyway, this is Lazarus with the 2nd one that hatched.. A bearded blue silkie. The black one wouldn't cooperate, so hopefully I can get his pic up soon.

I eggtopsied the one that was alive in the shell until atleast Sunday when I last saw movement. He never even pipped internally.. I could tell he was near full term. But wasn't about to break the membrane to find out since it should have hatched Saturday.. I wasn't up to the impending smell...

In order to get good chick pics you need a camera that has constant snapping. I can take about 50 pics in 10 seconds, then I can pic the right one and delete the rest.

Mine may do that.. I bought one that would do more than I needed. Haven't had it too long.. I guess I should read the manual.. I am like a man in the respect that I don't read instructions until it's a last resort. As long as I can turn it on, take pics and upload, I'm happy!!

I just went and filled out the hatch rate spreadsheet and on 12/11 I set 16 eggs and all 16 of those made it to lockdown. All 16 hatched. I had 4 I set on 12/12 that were incubating with the temp about 101 and I wasn't sure if I was suppose to add those to my hatch rate or not?
