Mahonri's 3rd Annual, BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

I need to make room for a few turkeys. Besides the fact that I just plain have tooooo many chickens. Out of control, ridiculous amount of chickens.... I am totally cutting down. I think 100 is enough, if I can get down to that.

I don't have too many chickens, but I AM getting too many eggs! Way more than I can use or sell anyway. I sold 15 layers and still could sell 20 more, but I like those girls too much! I suppose I could start stock piling, Pretty soon they'll all go broody and I'll have nothing.

Nice work, these are cute.

here's another project I have been working on. Converting my old dog houses into chicken houses. These dog houses were older than mud and falling apart.
he boxes are made out of wood from a old pigeon ranch they torn down around the corner from me.
I found out when most of the good wood was gone. But I got enough.
You guys dont laugh at my un-even cuts. Red, blue. green yellow , white.... I put a yellow base coat on it but want to paint it all different colors when summer comes. Still have nest boxes to complete for the last one.

my chickens use them for a toilet a see how much they appreciate all my hard work....

good use for old dog houses. old canvans trucker trap, old fence for ramp, And brand new 2 by 4s for Home depot. May get done someday.... Made 5 of them. That a lot of painting.
I see dog houses on craigslist all the time

Sometime it amazes me how much you can re-cycle

Very Cool! I've been considering doing that too, but most of the doghouses I come across are pretty small. I considered building "chicken condos" by stacking them on top of each other

First candle of my 24/24 detached air cell eggs. Eight gone. Six more maybes, I can only see a small bit of veining, no sign of embryo. The embryos seem to be sitting in the centre of the eggs, away from the shell as I am incubating them all upright. Only two air cells look any way stable, I was hoping to set them on their sides today but that is still out of the question. So I am propping up one side of the incubator then letting it flat again throughout the day. Argh. Every bator I have is auto turning! Will candle again maybe Sunday, am trying hard not to disturb these too much. The Lemon Pyle eggs sufferd the most. Thankfully 6/8 of my pearl partridge are doing ok. I am never buying eggs by post again.

You aren't removing the ones with detached air cells, are you? I hatched one of those out last year. Aircell pulled away 3/4 of the way down the egg. Lovely chicken out in my backyard is the result. Hopefully, I'm just reading your post incorrectly and the ones with the detached aircells are still in your incubator. Sorry you're having so much trouble.

OOOOHH! The name game....it's one of my favorites!

Mahonri - EVERYONE's first hatched chick!
Patrick - for the day they were set
Bunny - after the Easter Hatch-a-long
Brinsea - for obvious reasons
Then, for their efforts to make it work smoothly....
Kathy
Laree (or Larry)
Nota (or Taffy) after Notafarm
Alchemy for SCG (good one!)
Sherry or Andy after The Sheriff
Kellyn
Zype for Crazypetlady
CayuseRanch
ChestnutRidge
ChooksChick
HappyChooks
Thebirdguy
Tino for Notinoz
1muttsfan
Ya'll help me out here!

ooooh! Those are good! I especially like Larry cuz that's how you pronounce it. I think I'll go with Paddy instead of Patrick ... same difference.

I need to run and figure out when the Celeb Look-a-Like Contest ends and then maybe go take a pic.

So when does your bottom and leg stop hurting?  Yikes!  Those things look so scary.  And as someone else asked, will the chickens eat them?

:lau   Around here, we call the really big ones "The Continental Shelf."

Usually 24 hours. My butt stopped being shocky when I woke up this morning, so less than 8 hours. (Shocky: they don't hurt, exactly, it is like licking a 9-volt over and over) I have very little reaction to scorpion stings. Once, I got stung by a bark's 10 times---6 on one arm, 4 on the other....it was under my pillow.

And now the bug-a-phobes freak out.

Chickens will eat them...but more importantly, chickens eat the bugs scorpions prey on. I probably find 5-6 scorpions in the house a year---usually inside something. They are great climbers, but suck and being upsidedown. So I'll find them in pots, slick plastic toy tubs, the sink...once I found one in the little plastic thing where you stick your toilet brush. I still havent found that brush...

Big-butt-shelf is known as The Great Barrier Reef, and I have long lamented the loss of my ITC. ITC: Inner-thigh-clearance. Nowadays, my ITC could start a fire. Like a chubby kid in corderoys.

The butt-shelf: that part where your bottom hangs--most unfortunately--over your leg. If you were to stand on your head, you might be able to balance a drink on it.
<*snort*> But, really, this is too much personal inspection for me. That part of my body doesn't deserve a name - it's an unwelcome attachment but it's been there so long it's just me.

I always count 24 hours later, so Sunday at noon would have been day one. I don't think my little chickies are wearing a wingwatch

I have this mental picture started, Deb... what were those little rubber watches that were so popular? Oh, yah: Swatches! Perfect for an in-shell environment.

I think I might stop at 100. Maybe. I do have a ways to go, yet.

However, I've been home for the past two days and just now felt well enough to go fill feeders. The Starving Horde of Poultry made it difficult to maneuver the dolly with the bag o' feed from feeder to feeder until it was light enough for me to lift. (Really, they weren't starving, there was feed in them YESTERDAY.) Carl, my dominant roo, actually tried to keep peace! The tween-aged chicks from the NYD Hatch made it difficult for him because they are so much smaller and he was tripping over them, trying to control them AND the hens. I shouldn't laugh, but it was fun to watch.

Turkeys.. hmmm.... maybe a min-turkey. Just for flock enhancement, not for a meal.
