Ya'll help me out here!

You are welcome to read along and there are a few actvities that don't require setting eggs. And if you're game, some of us are setting turkeys next. OTherwise I know I'm looking forward to nest years hatch a long.
Ooh Can I join in on the Turkey hatch? I am planning on setting turkeys too!

In reference to candling... I am only candling two eggs each day to take pictures of them as a project for myself. That is actually why I set these eggs; all of the handling involved with candling is a risk - bacteria, jarring, dropped eggs - so I didn't want to jeopardize my "real" eggs for my project. I just thought I'd share them here for general interests' sake. I did not mean to be a bad influence.

This thread has the best candling pictures ever, and this is definitely where you should go if you want to compare your eggs to someone's.

I will only candle my "real" eggs on Day 7 and Day 14. On Day 7, I will get rid of my obvious clears only. On Day 14, the egg is almost completely dark, so I will discard any others which have not developed - no guessing, it will be obvious by then. Other than that, toss stinky eggs or weeping eggs and that's it. Today is only Day 5. There is no need to candle yet, and certainly no reason to toss anything.

Here is my entry for the most ingenious chicken design contest.
It is a "dickie" for a friend's rooster. The hens were always plucking out his neck feathers so my friend asked if I could create something to cover his neck area. This is what I came up with.
Thanks! Got it.

I knows it's not been 7 days yet. But I got curious.....is this ok?? Is that a blood spot??.
No, a blood ring is much more obvious. I'd leave that one alone and just see how it does.
Blood rings:

Got stung on the butt-shelf 4 or 5 times last night by this little guy. My bottom and leg were electrified all night!!

Goodness! (And the term I know for that area is the "bippie."

I think I might stop at 100.  Maybe.  I do have a ways to go, yet.

However, I've been home for the past two days and just now felt well enough to go fill feeders.  The Starving Horde of Poultry made it difficult to maneuver the dolly with the bag o' feed from feeder to feeder until it was light enough for me to lift.  (Really, they weren't starving, there was feed in them YESTERDAY.)  Carl, my dominant roo, actually tried to keep peace!  The tween-aged chicks from the NYD Hatch made it difficult for him because they are so much smaller and he was tripping over them, trying to control them AND the hens.  I shouldn't laugh, but it was fun to watch.

This made me laugh, because I spent a few hours today re-working and cleaning the coops. The DH bought me some fence privacy screen for my bday, and I decided to put it up before it was actually hot.

This stuff:

I took down all the scraps of screen I've been using---it was making my coops look a bit like Haiti.

Meanwhile: I had to let the NYD hatch teenagers out, so I could clean their run, dust it, and get ready to dust them. The little roosters were all up in my ankles, wanting attention. The head roo in that pen is an adult sizzle, Backfire. Backfire is sooooo gentle: he kept trying to distract them by pointing out treats rather than chasing them out from under my feet. It was fun to watch him try.

I think noon would be a little late to count as early morning.

My W/BH Am eggs from Wild Horse Farm came today, they are sooo pretty - and she sent 18! I gave a friend 6 of them as my incubator space is now premium real estate, and I still have a dozen bantam Cochin (lemon blue/BR) to come hopefully tomorrow.

Showery today but still mild and very nice - gave the horses access to the new lick tub for a while, they were exstatic, and let the hens out for a little while to forage around, They were also very happy.

I'm talkin' big time muddy mess here! I totally closed out 2 pens.

Looks just like mine!! Yuck.

Usually 24 hours. My butt stopped being shocky when I woke up this morning, so less than 8 hours. (Shocky: they don't hurt, exactly, it is like licking a 9-volt over and over) I have very little reaction to scorpion stings. Once, I got stung by a bark's 10 times---6 on one arm, 4 on the other....it was under my pillow.
And now the bug-a-phobes freak out.
Chickens will eat them...but more importantly, chickens eat the bugs scorpions prey on. I probably find 5-6 scorpions in the house a year---usually inside something. They are great climbers, but suck and being upsidedown. So I'll find them in pots, slick plastic toy tubs, the sink...once I found one in the little plastic thing where you stick your toilet brush. I still havent found that brush...
Big-butt-shelf is known as The Great Barrier Reef, and I have long lamented the loss of my ITC. ITC: Inner-thigh-clearance. Nowadays, my ITC could start a fire. Like a chubby kid in corderoys.

Shouldn't it be The Great Derriere Reef??
