so if somone just wants two chicks. sell them two chicks and four fertile eggs. fertile eggs are considered live. they can have their two chicks and breakfast! think outside the box.

Wow, sorry once again. Public Law is there for everyone to read. You know, I've tried, this is what Dr. Hoenig wrote. If we push to hard, we will have no voice.
If you wish to sell small chicks, then have them pick up at your farm. Period. It settles all that crap about infringing on ones rights and all that crap.
I supplied the statement, do just how you wish to do it. I am not going to stop you, slap your hand or police things. Personally, I only care about MY butt. So, feel free to continue on your own.
Every law has a reason. Be it the abused hens unite or the ones that are traumatized by the pig man and need a support group.
There are ways to sell what and how you want. UGH.
Chickn, it is being looked at with how the laws do not effect poultry clubs. I am fully aware that they do, can and will continue to sell.

The laws of buying 6 and needing 4 are looked upon as these guys will contact a city that is in the process of changing laws, such as Auburn, so they can have that chicken in every back yard, let them know the limit and then go from there. If people are so worried in the sales of these guys, why can't someone come to your farm, buy 1 and its settled.

As for opening up this can of worms, excuse the daylight out of me. I should shut up at this point because I could really tear up the keyboard right now.
Don't blame me or the state of Maine for cruelty allowing cruel intent on anyone BUT THE OWNERS. Do NOT! The only way to change that is to go up to the Gov'ners office and yell that it aint right. You aren't even living in Maine and tend to your own state, don't tell me I opened up that can of worms, There is no excuse to be ignorent of the laws.
I push laws, but how many people at the Oxford Chicken stock had birds under 2 months old? The one lady that had a hatchery send those.
Wow, I am so tired, perhaps we should have this locked down and have it over with. Sorry I reached out and tried once again.
YOU find out the laws.

WOW !!! I think you are taking this WAY to serious !! No one that is selling under 6 chicks is morally doing anything wrong !! Like I said in my other post CRUEL is NOT selling under 6 chicks, CRUEL is chickens that are caged 24/7 with little food and water and never get to peck around, never let out of a cage... CRUEL is when I went to buy a few pullets from a man and when I got there noticed that he had about 200+ chickens living in a 8x8 coop with no window never being let outside never having any light !!! That's CRUEL !!! What about all the baby roosters that are hatched at the hatchery's ?? What do you think happens to the extras?? Do you think they sell them in groups of 6? Don't think so !!! Selling under 6 chicks to a nice family with kids that wants to start a small backyard flock so the family can enjoy is NOT considered CRUEL to me at least, maybe others think different !!! I can totally understand needing more than 6 chicks when shipping is involved for the heat reason but NONE of us are shipping chicks at the swap, and impulse buying happens in all sorts of animals and Easter is past !! I think you are missing the WHOLE point of the swap thing, not all of us go to swaps to make a $$ off our chicks or to "break laws", some of us go there to enjoy the hobby and enjoy chatting/spending time with others that also enjoy the hobby. Come on we all know no one is getting rich off selling chicks (and if you are please share how your doing it) Swaps should be FUN and EJOYABLE for the whole family. And some how your making this about "chick abuse". Your "reaching out" has made swaps sound like an awful place with bad people abusing chicks. I really hope after all this people still keep going to swaps and supporting there "local farmers".... they really are fun and you get to meet lots of nice people !! Cant we all just have fun and enjoy the chicken hobby without all the drama? There are MUCH better things to worry about than selling under 6 chicks !! Really is no reason to get bent out of shape about it all, If you don't like what's going on than that's you but please let us others enjoy the great chicken world with our "chicken friends"

Why is it every hobby I get into runs into issues with the law. I am a sailor who builds wooden boats. There are laws about hull ID's. For a home boatbuilder it is not worth the hoops, so a group of us flew under radar, no registration, no hull id (as long as we didn't have a motor, there was a loophole). The "law" knew we were there, but didn't care... until a new builder started asking questions with the state, now I have to trailer my boat to Lake George, NY to sail it or risk getting fined on NH waters. Here we go again.

Everyone needs to chill on this thread and topic.

The law is the law. It doesn't matter if you think it's right or not. If you don't agree with it, then lobby to change it.

In the meantime, since these Chickenstocks are now on some ag official's horizon, I suggest you all toe that line - obey the law and sell chicks in lots of six, or sooner or later you will be caught and fined. Why risk it? If you want to sell fewer, do it on your own property. Problem solved!

Massachusetts has the same law. It is to keep people from buying one or two chicks at Easter that are cute until they're not - and abandoned or worse.

Wow.

I think I'll just disappear into the sunset.

I thought this was a forum for friends who enjoy raising poultry.
