Anyone not following this Law may be fined (or what ever happens to bad chicken people.)
Also, it is our civic responsibility to understand and follow the laws of the states that we sell, show or desire to do any of these things in.
I will keep you informed as I recieve information.
Thank you.
Kellie

I'm not trying to be snarky here and maybe someone else asked or addressed this already but in order for them to be "displayed" there has to be at least six if they are under 8 weeks? Wouldn't that include showing them then? Are eggs for hatching ok though? I'm not sure if anybody brings those to the chickenstocks or not. Just curious.

I am frankly appalled at the responses here.

spook merely told you what the law was in Maine. She didn't create it nor does she enforce it and she was only telling you this information for your benefit. Doesn't matter if you like it or not and it's up to you to obey it or not. The roasting she is taking in this thread is entirely uncalled for! Enough already. This will be locked up tight if I see one more slap at her for telling you something you just don't want to hear. Put your hands over your eyes and your fingers in your ears if you want, but back off the OP.

Here in NH...we had a ridiculous law being made about registering ALL Farm livestock....every last one...even chickens. And if you had a BIG farm that was a lot of tedious work for nothing. And since most of your livestock is meant for consumption...who do we contact when our animals are processed and will the registration be passed onto offspring? IT was really stupid to say the least...and a bunch of us started emailing/calling/writing letters to the state vet to change it or prevent it...and they scrapped the law because so many of us were up in arms about it. JOIN forces folks...put a stop to that law! You've got his name...email him.

If I could make comment at this point, Dr. Hoenig is trying to find out if we can sell chicks and the rules at this point.
IF you go and email him and the others at this point, he will not attempt to help us.
Regardless to me, you or BYC , these laws are being looked at.
I wanted to inform, let you know at what place we were at for creating a positive enviroment to sell poultry and other livestock at these events.
Bird shows, fairs and other events allow the sales of chicks. Dr. Hoenig is in the act of finding out how they can, where or age.

Also, being only human, Dr. Hoenigs assistant is out with a major physical injury meaning its going to take time to find out the details and routes around these laws.

Thank you.

I am going bug eyed with the Maine site, getting frustrated, I have been through just about everything there is written looking for said laws rules etc, and I am finding out way more than I need to know about licenses, slaughter and its regulations, diseases, etc everything but what I am looking for which is the specific "law" governing the sale of chicks.
can anyone find this out and post me a link
PLEASE!

Hmmmm, sounds a little odd to me !! So we/others CAN'T contact him ?!?! Because if we do he WONT help ?? Do I have that right ?? And his assistant is out ?? And you can't post the law or link to it so gypsy and the rest can see it? So let me see if I have this right..... you are the only one allowed to talk to him? WOW, Interesting stuff !!! Can't imagine he would be upset/not help because others want to "talk" to him about this issue, but with the way this whole thread is going I'm not surprised. Still seems a tad odd !!

Scratch all that, I found it! Not where I expected to but heres the link

Title 7: AGRICULTURE AND ANIMALS
Part 9: ANIMAL WELFARE HEADING: PL 1987, C. 383, §3 (NEW)
Chapter 731: MISTREATMENT OF ANIMALS HEADING: PL 1987, C. 383, §3 (NEW)

§3972. Unlawful use of animals
1. Unlawful use of animals. It is unlawful for any person to:
A. Sell, display, raffle, give away or offer for sale within the State any live animals that have been dyed or otherwise artificially colored; [1997, c. 690, §39 (AMD).]
B. Sell, display, raffle, give away or offer for sale to the public any live fowl, turtles or rabbits under 8 weeks of age in lots of less than 6; [1987, c. 383, §3 (NEW).]
C. Use any live animal as a premium, fund-raising device, prize or award or use any live animal in a raffle, contest, game or promotion except as authorized by law or rule; [1997, c. 690, §39 (AMD).]

It was hard to find because chicks in this case are referred to as "fowl" not chicks or poultry. It was actually in looking up the word "rabbits" that I was able to find it (and just the word "rabbit" does not do it, you had to add the s to the end, go figure.
