Maine Swaps 2011

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it being too cold... my broody GLW hatched out those 3 chicks you see above in the second week of January... it was -20. They were fine and my coop's not heated. I wouldn't recommend letting a broody go at it in Maine's December/January, but it's fine now.

Well my thought is that we have had to get rid of a bunch of eggs because they freeze and crack, and the ones she has been sitting on have been left to freeze for a while before she started sitting, so I think they probably suffered some damages from that.

We might be hatching some Showgirls.... My showgirl is sitting on some eggs, although im not sure the chances of them hatching, she just started sitting yesterday and I think it's still too cold, but we will see. The two males that may be the fathers are a black showgirl roo or a buff silkie roo. Depending on if we get any/what we get, we may have some available in a few weeks.

They are turken crosses. There are plenty of them, all about 3 months old now (they hatched first and second weeks of January). I am aware of their parentage (most of them). Some of them are mixed with EE in an attempt to make olive eggers... some with white leghorns (trying to make white eggers that lay very well) and one is mixed with brahma just cause I could. The black baby is bearded. Super cute.

Here's the daddy:

I still wouldn't write them off. The GLW kept returning to the wrong nest while I was at work. Some days those eggs were stone cold when I got to them. I had 75% hatch.
My turken roo comes from very unknown parentage. I was in the market for a rooster after a very short stint with polish rooster idiot, and saw this guy for sale as an 8 week old. Although I'm aware you can't tell much from phenotype, I've seen quite a few turken roosters with his coloring.

the swaps are where you will find all of these things, maybe not the breed that is just what anyone brings but they are different ages from chicks to adults. bring a way to bring them home (box or carrier) as not all sellers will have them and not all buyer bring them.
people bring turkeys, ducks, geese, guineas etc as well as chickens and even some have other animals. just depends if it's a poultry swap or a farm swap.
if you are looking for something in particular, we usually have a thread for each separate swap and you can post on one you are going to and hopefully get a jump on what everyone is bringing or line up sales before hand.

The swaps are a great way to meet your fellow local chicken keepers and buy, sell or trade poultry. You'll be surprised at the offerings at some of these swaps, it's not just chickens but guineas, quail, ducks, etc and even things like chicken decorations. TSC also has Farm Swaps (I forget the real name of it) that are more broad than just poultry.

I'm pretty local to you... so hi neighbor!
