Quail Trail: were these shipped eggs Doms? I'm so sorry you had a poor hatch. Depending on how my season goes this year, I might be tempted to set some shipped Dom eggs next year.

BTW, there's a fellow who's working on a Rose Comb Legbar project. He's using a Legbar and mixing it with a Rose Comb Brown Leghorn. He's planning to sell some of his eggs to get the gene pool into other hands to avoid loss of the breed if his flock gets contaminated. Food for thought... So many awesome breeds out there, and even within one breed, such a myriad of individual personalities... So little space, time and financial resources!!!

My little RCBL's are busy little birdies. They are feathering out very fast, and in spite of their smaller size, they zip around the meat birds in such a flash that the meaties never see them coming.

Buying new ones. I placed an order yesterday to get some root stock this fall. Figure that gives me time to prepare the bed and I can at least plant the rose bushes that I got at Mardens for $3 ea.

I saw those rose bushes and almost bought several...I would love to line my driveway with them, but I wanted to price them elsewhere. They are a very good price. I may go back one evening this week and pick up a few. Husband keeps telling me to just go buy the big roses at other places, but, since I want so many, I feel like Marden's deal is best for me. We'll see. It's nearly an hour over there to get them. If I get out of work early Wed or Thurs, I'll go.

You can plant new peonies in a few weeks. Be sure not to plant them too deep, or they won't flower. And I don't think you will get flowers the first year.

I tend to call the farm: Sinipso Croft. A bit of a story behind the name too.

And being a retired zoo keeper means animals are in my blood. On the plus side at least I don't have a lion or tiger in the basement. :).

Quailtrail~ I love the easter basket photo! Aww, so cute.

Widget you have a parrot too! Do you have a name for your farm?

Someone was talking about peonies not blooming. I have 5 peonies. I love them! One of them I have had for years and years no blooms, with plenty of dark green foliage . It's planted to the right depth, gets enough sun, nothing. I think I bought it as a root stock from maybe walmart or mardens. Some place cheap. I hope this is the year it finally blooms. I have no idea what the flowers will look like.

That's good, Widget! Wouldn't want to see you on an episode of North Woods Law regarding keeping exotic animals!

My gosh it is nice to see my birds roaming all over the yard! They're even venturing into the woods a bit! They look so pretty! I met a lady the other day who HATES all animals...she has no reason for it...just hates them. I was telling her how care free the chickens are, and what a joy they are to watch, but she wasn't buying it.

I agree, It is such a pleasure watching them roam the yard! Mine, too, are going farther and farther into the woods on their own. I have to keep a really close eye on them, because I've seen a fox in the yard twice in a week... I imagine he/she would snatch one pretty quickly. I can't imagine not having animals in my life.

Unfortunately parrots mimic sounds they find interesting. Usually the louder and more annoying the better.

That would be the way. Maybe get one of those noise machines like the counseling offices do so he's less likely? I bet you could sing to him. It would be great if he learned the jeapordy theme! Or star trek. Or little house on prairie! Oh yeah.

I have wondered what that story was for a while now.

Four babies out today and four goose eggs to go in tonight. I am to a point where I need another incubator. 9 of the Javas sent to me out of two dozen are developing. They were so damaged by shipping. I am surprised to have that many really. Not one of them is mottled though, all blacks. I'll take it but I love the mottled.
The new gander seems to be working out. He and she 'like' each other but his few observed attempts to mate have been failures. I am telling myself there's still time. I might be lying though.
I put some pansies in and tried to lay out the drip line. Fence posts are almost all out of the ice now but the fencing still isn't here. Oh, and I went to take the kids to the nearest beach and found it closed. I have lived in Maine nearly all my life and never had a beach be closed before. It was irritating and surely a disappointment.

OH AND EVERYONE CHECK FOR MITES. We had them here and the ticks for humans/horses/dogs etc are also definitely out. Three in the last 24 hours.

Eek! Well, related directly to my previous post... I was just out with the girls and all of a sudden on top of my brush pile were three quizzical little faces looking at us. Fox kits. Interestingly, they were gray, not reddish like last year, even though the two adults I've seen around have been reddish. Anyway, I quickly shooed/grabbed 5 of my 6, but the 6th ran INTO the woods. She was under the evil Japanese barberry and I couldn't get her. I was quite close to letting her choose her own destiny, when she finally came out and I got her back to the coop/run. Time to seriously consider building a tractor.
