thanks! That was what I was thinking but DH was all up in arms that it was from not using it to starts all because a co-worker said I should be using it...Unless he showed signs of Coccidiosis, I wouldn't. But, that's just me. It's so easy to jump on the wagon and use Amprolium. But, in the long run, the chicks will need to develop immunity to it anyways. Of course, if you are adding chicks from here and there, or have had issues with it in the past, that might be reason to use it. As he was only 4 days old, I doubt very much that it was Coccidiosis, as he probably didn't have ground contact. He was probably just a failure to thrive chick. I've lost 3. One was a mushy chick to start with, most likely died from peritonitis. One was a meat chick that went down hill rather rapidly. And the 3rd was a Dom that was comatose when I brought her home... most likely due to mis management at the hardware store he was shipped to.
Thanks. I have tried to explain this to DH but he is stubborn. I will hold my ground though as I am stubborn too.Q.T. Medicated feed will do nothing other than block Thiamine so the Coccidiosis can not multiply. It will not stop any other disease process, and it stands to reason that it will also block thiamine absorption in the chick, making it more susceptible to illness. There is one old timer who swears by the addition of eggs to the chicks diets to boost their immunity. He uses cooked eggs, so, I can't wrap my head around how that would help, b/c the eggs are cooked... but, the chicks certainly love eggs, and they are a great nutrition boost for them. My chicks go into a feeding frenzy when I put in some scrambled eggs.
@quailtrail , how do they seem to be doing now?
I just stopped by the post office to let them know that we are expecting chicks next week, and I asked them what time the truck usually arrives. The lady was very stern with me and told me that the mail must be delivered, as addressed, and that I would have to wait until the postal carrier brought them to my door. Or I could notify them 3 days in advance and pick them up at the post office, but not before lobby hours began.
I said, "Are you sure? Even for baby chicks?" And she said, "Oh! Baby chicks! I thought you said checks."![]()
So I should be expecting a phone call next Wednesday around 6:15 AM.
