Maine

I had to post 2 more photos- one of the almost finish coop and run, and one of all 10 of them on the roost....they are all getting along nicely now, no more issues!

Today was an interesting day, all started last night when the horses started snorting and wide eyed, running in the pasture, went out got them all calmed down, my uncle lives next to me and his hen was injured by a predator and not walking normal. got up this morning headed outside to do chores and my neighbor up in back of me, his giunea hen was in my uncles yard, we opened the fence so it would come through in hopes to catch it, at that time my neighbor was here to try and get his GH which we waited for it to go into my coop then he was able to catch him. come to find out he had a coyote that chased the GH into this direction scattered all his hens in all directions, last update all his hens returned home and acounted for. All of my flock safe so far, my uncles hen still not doing to good on her legs. I knew something has been around the way the horses have been acting. so trying to keep an eye on the flock and watching for the coyote, we can hear them every once and awhile at night. well anyway my nieghbor went home with 3 month old EE and a EE mix and of course a buff baby silkie which seems to be a roo for a pet for his 3 daughters. My EE rooster named Ike so far has done an awesome job of taking care of his hens.
I have had chickens off and on since a kid, and Ike (my roo) I have never seen this in my life. one of my hens went down thru pasture, got down into tall grass and was near the brook sqawking so loud that I thought something had had her, when Ike flew down over the hill into the grass where she was and all was silent for a moment, then I could see the hen and Ike coming up the hill, with them stopping several times for a moment ,and Ike my roo actually looking the hen all over to make sure she was ok, when they got back up here they stopped near the coop and Ike made these funny little noises and a couple other hens came running over to them. this I wouldn't of believed if I hadn't been standing there watching, Ike pulled a feather out of his own tail and proudly gave it to the hen he just rescued, she picked the feather up walked a few feet away as proud as could be and ate the feather. I never knew that a rooster did that. Been a long week end hopefully no coyotes tonight.

Cool rooster story, Paulajon!
That is one thing I love about chickens, - just watching all those types of interactions and ways they communicate. It seems like I learn something new every week.

Which makes me wonder if other animals do these cool things and I just don't notice, or if it has to do more with a flock mentality, or what. I mean, it doesn't seem like watching a herd of cows would be quite so interesting, but I've never done that (at least not for more than a few minutes!).

Pete, our sizzle hen, hatched an egg! There were 4 under her and when I went out to check on her last night before bed, there was one little whitish/greyish puffball under her. And one of the remaining eggs is squeeking like crazy, so she might get another!! The kids are BEYOND excited. she is their favorite and they have so missed carrying her around and loving on her. It was an exciting thing to see after losing all our meat birds yesterday

Just putting out some feelers. We have 13, Four week old penciled runners from Holderreads SQ lines. We are getting to the point where I can make some guesses on sex by voice. We'll keep a few, boys but will need to find homes for some. If anyone is interested in drakes, please pm me. Unless you already have ducks the boys will have to go in sets of two or more.

I have two blue runners. Penciled means the ones who look like they are wearing T-shirts, right? Respectable stock you have there. There is another guy up here with Holderreads geese. Maybe his ducks too for all I know. He says they make great duck soup if you can't sell them.

This is one of the coolest stories I have read about a rooster. I watched mine making sure he brought food to his favorite hen and guarding her in little circles while she ate but not giving 'flowers' so to speak. That is pretty great. How is he with you?
