Maine

Hrm split opinions on the lighting. I think I will do a split and see how it works.

Another question: Does anyone have a good source for organic free range turkey for thanksgiving? (processed and unfrozen). I have searched craigslist and online but I wanted to get some opinions from everyone first, of course if any of you have one I would love to get one from a BYCer so long as you are within reasonable distance of Cumberland town.

Thanks!

I think I'm going to sell my ducks. They're too messy for me. They are free range but return to the coop at night. Minimal chasing on some nights involved, but usually they go right in and are waiting to be locked up for the night.

I have 2 pairs of pekins and a rouen cross that would need to go with the older pekin pair. The older pair is about 10 months old and the girl has laid an egg every single day except three days since she started laying in early May. She's a champ. The younger pair was born in June (offspring of the older pair) and may not lay this year, or may, not sure.

I won't be able to sell them until probably next weekend (long story) but is there any interest? We'd love to eat them, so no worries if there's not.

my reason for lighting only in the am, I am cheap. the sun comes up and takes over from there. mine also lay earlier in the day and don't lay at night (which in the winter can become frozen/broken eggs)
there was a man at the waterville swap yesterday that had 4 turkeys he wanted to sell (he didn't bring them) but decided since he may not be in maine this winter, they needed to go. not sure if he will be at the augusta swap next weekend or not. if you are interested, i can see if I can locate him for you. I think he lives in vassalboro??

Hey there all,

I'm posting again from my new digs in Maine. Cumberland to be specific. MustardTiger, have you talked to Kay at http://www.localharvest.org/spring-brook-farm-M29127. IIRC, they are doing fresh turkeys.

Hi all again!! Now that we are settled enough to start considering chickens, I am going to be a little more active in posting.

glad to see you are back.
and settled. (more settled)

I am looking to add 2 more hens to my coop for winter. I want birds that either lay a dark brown egg or blue/green eggs. I will consider a white egg layer. need to be large fowl and need them soon. why don't I want brown egg layers? because i need to know what eggs come from what hens. pm me with what you have.
thanks

There is a farm in windsor that does free range heritage breeds- Emma's family farm. That might be a bit far for you though. There are also free range, but not heritage breed in New Sharon- I think it's called the Turkey Farm. I used to drive by it on my way to class.
