Hello All,

I'm new on here and am hoping this is the right place to post! My husband, dog and I are moving to Maine this summer - finally! After living in an apartment for 12 years, I'm looking forward to having a garden, chickens, a house, a yard for the dog to run in... We're beginning to look at houses, mainly in Cape Elizabeth and Falmouth. I know those two towns allow chickens, but unfortunately I'm finding that several neighborhood association covenants don't! Any advice on which neighborhoods/areas I should be looking?

I am seriously reconsidering going to tomorrow's CMBF meeting after reading this in the paper this morning:

This year the influenza season is definitely more serious than any other year in recent memory," he said. "I think the last time it was that serious was about 10 years ago."
Some area hospitals, including CMMC, have started to see a decline in cases in recent days, though they remain very busy and believe numbers could jump again. Other hospitals are as busy, or busier, than they have been all season.
Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington had 76 confirmed cases of flu in December. It has had 32 in just the first 10 days of January.
Across the area, patients are arriving at emergency rooms with fever, chills and aches. Patients may be admitted if they are elderly, have an underlying medical condition or develop complications. Area hospitals have increasingly seen cases of pneumonia and bronchitis, along with the flu or developing afterward.
And then there's the stomach virus.
According to a report released last week, the state CDC has seen 16 outbreaks of Norovirus since November. The virus is easily spread through contact with a person who is sick or who has been sick in the past two to five days, by eating food prepared by someone who is sick or by touching contaminated surfaces.
CMMC, St. Mary's Regional Hospital in Lewiston and Franklin Memorial in Farmington have all seen cases of the virus. At CMMC, in particular, the stomach virus has added to the number of patients filling the hospital.

If you're not feeling well, or have been exposed, don't go. If you're immunocompromised, don't go. If you're generally healthy, go, and wash your hands well and frequently and don't touch your face with your hands.

Of the two Falmouth might be a better choice. Not that Cape doesn't have some more rural areas but they are rapidly disappearing. I guess it also depends on your budget too. Anything near the ocean and lot size goes down and more restrictions on what you can have. That goes for both Cape and areas such as Falmouth Foreside. For Falmouth I would look in the Blackstrap Rd/Route 100 vicinity (West Falmouth). It is well inland but close to everything. Plenty of really nice older upgraded homes and land to go with them. Not sure with the Cape Elizabeth neighborhoods. I grew up in Westbrook (right next to Portland) and the Cape always had a reputation of being made up of well-to-do snobs so I must admit I am a bit biased against that area.

This is what I have heard also.

The norovirus is extremely contagious. It is not in our school at the moment (that I know of), but it hit a few years ago and everyone seemed to get it. They had trouble getting enough subs. Horrible projectile vomiting. I hope not to see that this year, although I know it is circulating.

The girl in Benton that died had the seasonal (cough, fever) flu. I don't know if she had a compromised immune system, but so sad and scary.

Welcome IZZYBELLA. I don't have any advice for you re: location to settle in, but I bet you're truly excited about the opportunity to have your own yard and space. Good luck with your search for a new home. where are you coming from? I don't know how important it is to settle in one of these 2 towns, but depending on what your transportation availability is, and how far you are willing to travel for work, you might get more land and a better house if you settle in a more rural town near by. Any kids, with school quality issues to keep in mind?? Also, the more rural towns will have less summer tourist traffic to deal with. It all boils down to priorities. Good luck with your search.

I'd also check around gorham, this just outside portland. do you have jobs lined up? if so, maybe do a real estate search for so many miles from that point to help narrow the field.

not to make any of you envious, but i had a date with jeff dunham last night. (me and 5000 other people,lol) he was great, It was a good ending to a great week for me.

I let the flock out to free range yesterday and today- finally enough bare ground for it to be worth it. My two white rocks are brown now though!

Hoppy- was Jeff Dunham around here?Portland? We saw Jim Gaffigan in Hampton beach a few years ago, and that was neat! I really want to see Bob Marley- I'm ashamed to say I never have!



I know it's still January- but it's getting closer to spring, right?? There was some mention awhile back about a get together at some point, and maybe I've lost it, but I might be willing to do it here- I've got a big backyard, but thats about it!
