Mainechick, so sorry about your buff Orpington.

Gracejr, my roosters also look like that, although not quite that bad. They did both have black areas due to frostbite in the winter, but then I noticed other spots, and sometimes blood on the comb or wattles. I see them tussle quite a bit. One of them will be going to the freezer next fall, maybe both, if I hatch a better rooster.

It has begun. Came home a few minutes ago and just had to check the incubator. I now have one, still damp, Icelandic chick.

Hard to tell if any other eggs weres pipping yet but I'm sure there will be more chicks waiting for me in the morning.

I haven't told hubby about going to the swap tomorrow. He's out of state and doesn't care for the flock, so I'm hoping he won't notice a few extras. I candled the eggs again today and the 30 that are left seem to be doing just fine. I wonder if when the coop is done I'll have room for for all of the ones I want to keep....

Congrats! I have wanted Icelandics for a few years now. Maybe I can build a second coop for all of the breeds that I want.

Do you do anything for it or let them be? They're split up now, going to have DH catch/hold Pepper tomorrow so I can try cleaning him up and see how he looks then. I am worried about that eye though. :/

Quote: I just let them be, but I haven't really seen any serious injury yet. I'm hoping they can continue to coexist until fall, when we'll have an appointment at the butcher's anyway. I think it helps quite a bit if I can get them out free-ranging, but I only do that when we're around and when I don't see the neighbor's dog in the yard.

I caught them fighting after I got home this afternoon, so they've been separated. If it's pox is there anything I can do, or just wait it out? And I agree about the eye - what can I do to treat it?
Pox is viral so aside from comfort / support, there's not much to do. They could get infection on top of the viral lesions. So just clean them up. May want to get some saline irrigation at the store and use that then some triple antibiotic ointment on top. I'm not saying it's pox, but it certainly looks like it could be.

Again, if it's pox, it's viral... nothing to treat it. I'd use a warm wet cloth and "rub/wash" the eye a few times a day (like 2-3). If it doesn't get better after a day or so of this he could have a secondary infection on top of it. At that point I would buy this and use it:

Not sure if you can get that at TSC or your local farm store.
