Haha! My EE roo from a different hatch all of a sudden turned into a total jerk in the past few days. Too bad he doesn't have more meat on him.
We had a long discussion about his behavior and where that would lead him, but he continues to be defiant.

Try picking him up and carring him around, pet him and scratch him uder his wattles. they love attention! and make sure you are giving him treats to share with his girls. If this does not improve his attitude. do what I do I put my Rooster in a small pen (like the ones they use for little infants or puppies). I'll take a pic of it and post. I put him in there while I do my morning chores so he can not be threaten (by some that I do) and sneak up on me. i also put him in there during my childrens outside playtime. In the evening for 2 hours I let all my chickens out to free range.

Thanks for the advice but he was never meant to be anything other than meat. I have a Turken Roo who is my alpha male and decently well behaved except for a bit of chasing my girls first thing in the morning.

If anyone is looking for fresh, organically grown veggies this season and live in the Eustis/Farmington/Skowhegan areas, we will be having many packages available as the season progresses. All organically grown, and a wide variety of berries and veggies. We also have some mini rex rabbits ( 1/2 pedigree available ), and some indian runner ducklings among other things currently for sale.

Just to remind folks, We're still here in Temple, raising Bantam Cochins and Belgian d'Uccle Booted Bantams.

We occasionally have fertile hatching eggs and started birds for sale.

I'm back after surgery for a gastric banding gone wrong.......
I missed the Swap at the TSC in Augusta last week.
I am looking for a few Barred Rock hens withing 45 minutes of Augusta or Lewiston if anyone has some they want to part with.
I am getting a few of this, a few of that right now and seeing what breeds I like the most, then will start building a flock when I have made up my mind.
I have a few Buff Orps, a couple of Cochins, Golden Comets, and few banties.
Question, when I do decide what I like the most where do i find good stock to start building a flock, waqht questions do I ask the breeder? Do I need any regular testing done if I am just planning on keeping a backyard flock?

You will love the Barred Rocks. I'll probably be looking for a couple more next year since my one hen is almost three and has stopped laying. While I prefer local, home grown chickens (mostly from the great people here

) I am not opposed to ordering from my local feed store.

They get their birds from Cackle. And I have personally ordered from Ideal and ended up with great egg layers. If I were into showing then it would be a different story. I would want the best of the best. Even then I know that not all the chicks from two 'perfect' birds will be 'perfect'.
As for quality show/breeding stock I'm sure the good folks here who have spent many more years with chickens can give you a better answer. I do know those who breed for quality are very dedicated to their chickens and want only the best. They will be NPIP certified and don't be surprised if they don't want you near their birds. Not because they don't want you to see them but because they don't want their birds to become infected with something that you might not even realize you have on you.

On a non chicken related note does anyone know where I could get some lamb meat this fall ? I don't need a whole lamb or even half. Just enough meat to satisfy my desire to make lamb stew once in a while. Or some chops to grill. It seems that people only sell half or whole and not smaller portions. My local meat markets seem to stock only beef, chicken and pork. Not that I don't like those meats but once in a while I like something different. And forget the meat departments in the grocery stores. I'm too used to fresh meat to want to buy from them.

I'm not positive, but I think White Water Farm in New Sharon (where I usually get chicken feed) has lamb. They do have a variety of meats. New Sharon may be a trek for you, but if you were in the area for some other reason it might make sense. You could call first and ask about what they have.
