Maine

I can do slaughter. I raise those birds to be meat. I think of them as meat from the beginning. I might like them, but I know their ultimate purpose is to become food.

I don't have a problem with killing chicks that don't hatch right.

And I don't have a problem, theoretically, with putting something out of its misery. I'm just a mess when it happens. I'm lucky BF did it, but I still stood at the window and watched Ginger go.

Sorry about the hens and lame duck that had to go, SCG. I will be sad this fall when we part with some of our older hens, but we can't supply people with eggs if we are running a retirement home. It is definitely the worst part of keeping chickens for me.

I hope to get some photos of my new chicks soon. It's hard to get home from school in time, and today I was preoccupied with integrating the crusty chicks in with the others. They are not totally out of the woods yet, but I'm definitely optimistic now. I don't regret helping these chicks out of the shell, even though I was apprehensive about doing so.

I tossed the 4 dead eggs from the incubator today. 3 were late quitters, and 1 looked like it quit very close to hatch time, with full feathers. Not sure why that happened.

I just wanted to stop in and say hi! I am in Gray and we have about 40 chickens.
Hi to you. I spent my first 8 years in Gray on a beautiful farm. We had sheep, chickens, horses. It was an incredible place to spend a childhood. I spent my summers with a hammer, cracking black walnut shells on an old granite well curb. And when I wasn't eating nuts, there were lots of berries to be had, a brook with a sand bar, a turtle pen, a climbing cliff with an old gnarled pine tree that you could step out onto from the top of the cliff. Oh how I hated to leave that farm!!!

I am soon to be over run w/ chicks, so if you need some, I go to school in Fairfield on Monday's and Wednesday's and can drop some off

Any chance you're going to have any dom pullets to spare? I have 3 which are supposed to be pullets, but they look suspiciously male to me. My hubby works at Mainely Trusses, or I could take a trip to Fairfield. What program are you in??? (if I'm not being too forward to ask.)

Where do you go to school in Fairfield? I graduated from KVCC (when it was KVTC) in 1995.

He is going to be soooo mad when he sees the extra 15 eggs. I am going to KVCC. I figured now that my youngest is in pre-k, I needed to go back to school. I graduated in 2000, so I guess better late than never?

Hi Tammaclean, Welcome!!

Here are some pictures of the fun cross who is a BrabanterxOrloff cross I have that I have talked about a few times. So pretty! Just bragging. Just got a dog house for the chickens and might get another ha ha ha (cheap!)

You have a right to brag...She is pretty! Now I'm thinking I need to go get that free doghouse I was offered back when I started this venture.

Never too late, Kinsey! It took my husband 9 years to get his degree but he worked full-time so could only take a few classes here & there. He has no student loans because we paid as he went. We had our first child the year he graduated from college...a degree & a son within 3 months of each other.
