Maine

Pretty sure I lost one of my girls today looked all over the yard and she is nowhere to be found. I think maybe a predator snatched her. Im pretty sad this was our first batch of chickens and only two months in we lost one... I think free ranging might not be a possibility here any suggestions on a cheap chicken run? Now down to 3 roos and 2 hens
If you have facebook, beyond CL you can join these swap and sell groups...usually some good fencing stuff for free or reasonable trades, I have seen bunches around the Ellsworth area lately. I let my chicks out at @ 0545, they have a fenced in area, but no overhead cover outside the coop, I wait for the call from the kids and the future wifey telling me the headcount is the same

I have been trying to remember where I saw the avian netting to throw overhead on the paddock and have had no luck searching my memory banks...not HD, not TSC...two more stops before I give up.

Good luck, hope your spring gets better soon!!!!

Canieldonrad, it can be really hard to find work here before you're actually HERE - when we moved back from the west coast, my husband looked for months and didn't get any calls back for interviews until he bit the bullet and flew out here. Once he was here, he found a job in under two weeks. Depending on your field, it can be really easy or really hard to find work, but it is worth it! Especially if you are into local food and farming, this is the place to be.

Justinelee, we kept our hens in with our goats all last year and never had a problem. The chickens scratched up the manure in the goat pen and ate all the flies too!

there are several poultry shows beside the the fair shows in maine.
this is one of main clubs and the 2nd link is the list of their shows.
(we have a show coming right up MAY 26 at the windsor fairgrounds)

I do not live in Maine, I live in Kentucky. But it has long been a dream of mine to re-locate. This spring I just about packed my bags to move to the Lewiston/Auburn area. Which is where I plan to go if opportunity ever arises. But due to fear that I would have trouble finding work and a place to stay I backed out. I would like to possibly attend a show in Maine as early as the fall if my schedule permits.

I had been told that by several people. I spent about 6 months looking for work, while living here, before giving up. I had several places contact with responses along the lines of, "You would fit our position perfectly, but we just aren't going to risk hiring out of state."

Work in that area is very difficult to find. I have a friend who lives in Lewiston and he is struggling to make ends meet. He has been looking for another FT job and/or a PT job to help with the bills. Plus with all the fires lately in Lewiston the housing shortage that was already bad just got worse.

and to think, all those building that are burning are occupied and they still are tearing down unlivable buildings. very sad.

Dan, I wish you the best in following your dream. Maine is truly a beautiful state, but the economy is depressed and the tax rate is high. In spite of the economics, I urge you to take some time and check out the job market in person. Can you take a week, and call it a "vacation"?

On an other note, I just moved my chickens into their coop. I moved the 10 week old RIR cockrel first, and as soon as he got away from the flock, he let out his first crow. He was quickly answered by one of the "pullet" Doms crowing back at him. So, I'm thinking I'm right about Aubuchon giving me 3 cock Doms when I ordered pullets. One of the reasons that I chose that breed is because they are supposed to be real easy to sex... DUH! That leaves me with 2 for sure pullets, and wondering about the 3 EE alias Araucana "pullets". They're doing quite a lot of sparring and tails are getting quite long.

Does anyone use other livestock like guinea hens or geese to protect their flock?

I have a pair of Pomeranian Geese here that are pretty great so far. (Very satisfying when they cock their heads to watch a bird go over, assessing it the whole while.) The cocks do their jobs most of the time but honestly, hawk proofing and smart housing are still the #1 here.
